Is God a Family?

Is God a Family? Well, most people are not sure of the answer. What’s amazing about this is that God created you and I to be part of that Family! Want to learn more? Read on!

God is the Father

All throughout the Bible, we see the father-son relationship of the two God Beings. While we might already know that One God is referred to as Father and the other as a Son, it is not so often we think of them as a Family!

First, let’s establish some facts. The Bible reveals that one of the members of the God Family is called the Father. Here are some of the best verses that support this:

  • Matthew 6:8-9 – “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
  • Matthew 5:17-18 – “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
  • 1 Corinthians 8:6 – Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.
  • James 1:17 – Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
  • Ephesians 4:4-6 – There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

As you can see, God is our Father and He is the One who takes care of us. He is not just a Father to Jesus Christ (Yahshua the Messiah), but the Father of us all.

Christ the Son

Now, we go to Yahshua. All throughout the Gospels, we see how the Messiah repeatedly called God as His Father, thereby, making Him the Father’s Son. We read:

  • John 20:17 – Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”
  • John 5:17 – But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
  • Matthew 16:13-16 – When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”  He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
  • Luke 1:35 – And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
  • John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Now, this is not a complete list. However, these verses should be enough to show you that Yahshua is indeed referred to multiple times as the Son.

Is God a Family: the Father and Son Relationship

The Father and the Son are members of the Godkind. This means that it is not just the Father who is God but also the Son. Notice Hebrews 1:8-9:

But to the Son He says:

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”

At the beginning of this passage, it says, “But to the Son He says.” The “He” here is referring to the Father. This is evident when you read the whole chapter of Hebrews 1.

Now, this is crucial because what the Father is about to say is going to confirm that Jesus is part of the God Family, thereby, making Him, Christ, God!

We read the Father talking to the Son: “Your throne, O GOD, is forever and ever!”

As you can see, the Son is therefore God, without a shadow of a doubt.

Also in John 1:14, we read:

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Greek word “monogenees,” which is translated as “only begotten” in this verse and John 1:18, highlights the familial connection between God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Dr. Spiros Zodhiates, a scholar of the Greek language as it appears in the Bible, explains that “monogenees” is a combination of “monos,” meaning “alone,” and “genos,” meaning “race, stock, family.” This indicates that Jesus Christ, who came to reveal God, belongs to the same family, stock, and race as God Himself. There’s plenty of evidence in the Scriptures suggesting that the Godhead operates as a family.

Human Beings as part of God’s Family

Now, here’s the most interesting and amazing Biblical truth: God is making a family — and that family will include you and me!

We read in Hebrews 2:10:

10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

We can see here that Jesus Christ is indeed the Son, but He will not be the only son because, in the future, God plans to add more sons and daughters to glory into His glorious Family!

This should not be difficult to believe because right in the beginning, the BIble tells us that we are made in the image of God! We read in Genesis 1:27:

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

From the very beginning, God intended for us to be like Him. Among all the living creatures created by God, only humans were given the privilege of being made in His image.

Our first ancestors faced a test of obedience. In the garden, there were two special trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2:9).

God offered mankind the opportunity for immortality through the Tree of Life. However, Adam and Eve disobeyed by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. This disobedience introduced sin into the world, and its consequence is death (Romans 6:23).

Even in the Garden of Eden, God desired for Adam and Eve to pass the test of obedience and gain immortality, becoming part of His family. However, they sinned, and to save humanity from the penalty of sin, Jesus had to die for us all (John 3:16-17).

Notice the great masterplan of our God as we read in 2 Corinthians 6:18:

“I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty.”

God is currently preparing us to be part of His Kingdom — His FAMILY. This life serves as a training ground for us. Our goal isn’t to gather riches or chase worldly ambitions.

Instead, it’s to confirm our choice to follow God’s path and to prove ourselves worthy of the incredible calling He has given us. Our ultimate destiny and purpose revolve around becoming members of God’s family and reigning alongside Him in His future Kingdom.
