7 Fascinating Facts about the
Lord's Prayer
You Probably Don't Know

1. The Lord’s Prayer is found in two Gospels

The Lord’s Prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. There are slight differences in how the two Gospel writers recorded the prayer with Matthew’s version to be longer.

Here’s how Matthew recorded the Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

On the other hand, this is how Luke recorded the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11:2-4:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”

Matthew’s version is longer compared to Luke’s. Moreover, Matthew concluded the Lord’s Prayer with the words, “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Luke didn’t include these words.

Furthermore, Matthew and Luke recorded the prayer in a different context. For Matthew, the Lord’s Prayer was embedded in the midst of the Sermon on the Mount where Christ was teaching the multitude of people.

In Luke, the Lord’s Prayer was given to the disciples after one of Christ’s disciples requested Christ to teach them how to pray.

2. The Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic

Jesus was a Jew and He spoke Aramaic, not Greek or English. Jesus isn’t His real name as well. When He taught His disciples how to pray, He was speaking to Jewish people who also spoke Aramaic. Thus, the Lord’s Prayer is originally spoken and written in Aramaic.

3. The Lord’s Prayer is not the correct name

The Lord’s Prayer is actually a wrong name given to the prayer Jesus (Yahshua) taught. Some people refer to it as the “Our Father” prayer, which is a better name. In Latin, the prayer is known as Oratio Dominica or Pater Noster.

However, if you want to be accurate, the Lord’s Prayer should be called the “Model Prayer.” The real “Lord’s Prayer” is found in John 17, where you will read the prayer of Jesus for the believers in the Garden of Gethsemani.

For the purpose of this discussion, let me just continue using the term most people are familiar with.

4. The Lord’s Prayer is a guide

As pointed out earlier, the term “Lord’s Prayer” is a misnomer, which led many people to simply memorize and recite this prayer. Our Savior didn’t intend this prayer to be repeated so many times that at times, it has become an empty and meaningless prayer.

This is another point that supports the fact that the Lord’s Prayer is more properly referred to as the Model Prayer. It should serve as a model that we can use in praying. We can use this prayer as an outline to guide us in what we should pray and how we should pray. It teaches reverence, submission to God’s will, reliance on Him for daily needs, confession of sins, and seeking deliverance from evil.

In our Teach Us to Pray course, I have discussed the deep meaning of the Model Prayer, including what each line means and how we can use it in our prayers.

5. The Lord’s Prayer is super popular

The Lord’s Prayer is so popular that most Christians have memorized it. The Lord’s Prayer is the most widely used prayer in the world and it has been translated into over 1,500 languages.

The prayer isn’t just used in churches, but also in courtrooms, political speeches, and even in sports arenas. The Lord’s Prayer has been the subject of many poems, songs, paintings, and movies.

6. The Lord’s Prayer has an emphasis on community

The Lord’s Prayer is commonly prayed by individuals. However, it has a strong emphasis on community. The fact that it is a communal prayer is seen in the use of plural pronouns such as “us” and “our.”

The lesson here is that Jesus or Yahshua was encouraging His people to pray for one another and they should also pray together.

7. The Lord’s Prayer has ancient prayer Jewish connections

The structure, language, and themes of the Lord’s Prayer have a connection to the Jewish tradition at the time of Christ. This tells us that Yahshua (Jesus) used existing teachings and prayers as a way to set the common ground in His teachings about prayers.

For example, Jewish prayers contain three common elements that the Lord’s Prayer also possesses. These are praise, petition, and supplication. Moreover, the use of “Father” is actually a language commonly used in the Hebrew Bible.

In the Talmud, there are also pleas or prayers against temptations. Jewish prayers also have a strong focus on God’s Kingdom, which is also what we can see in the Lord’s Prayer.

What you don’t know about the Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer, which is properly known as the Model Prayer, is no doubt a wonderful embodiment of Yahshua’s teaching about prayer. While it is a short prayer, the prayer encompasses profound theological concepts and addresses essential aspects of the believer’s relationship with God.
