I’m on the Brink of Leaving Christianity

I recently read someone sharing their experience about Christianity and how they’re struggling with their faith. They said they’ve been a Christian for years but are now exhausted, full of doubt, and tired of trying to fight the same sin over and over again.

Here’s his message:

I am on the brink of leaving Christianity. I am not going to share some type of sob story,im just going to he honest. I have been following christianity for about 2(soon 3) years of my life, and have been raised around christianity for all of it. I am genuinely tired of following this religion. I dont feel like I have the mental discipline to do it,and even then,Im struggling to believe it.

Something I have always devoted myself to doing (even in my current phase) is defending Christianity. As much as I may not believe in it one day,I will not let someone argue against it without be saying something back, but by this point I’ve just realized its a waste of my time. I want to keep pushing, but every time I do,I fail, and I have been trying to improve for years now,and im not getting anywhere. I feel disgusting by the things I do all the time when nobody can see. I hate how I constantly fail all the time, and despite being told “keep going” there is no way out. I have been trying for about 5-6 years to break free from one sin,and im not getting far.

If you’ve ever felt that way — like you’re barely holding on to your faith — you’re not alone. Many believers have walked through this same valley of discouragement. But before you give up, here are 5 things you need to remember when you feel like walking away from Christianity.

1. Faith isn’t about perfection, it’s about direction.

God never asked you to be perfect — He asked you to follow Him. The Christian life is not a straight, upward climb. It’s a journey filled with stumbles, learning, and growing. When you fail, it doesn’t mean God is done with you. It means He’s inviting you to lean on His grace more deeply.

2. Your struggle doesn’t disqualify you — it proves your faith is real.

The very fact that you hate your sin and long to do better shows that the Holy Spirit is working in you. Those without the Spirit don’t wrestle with sin; they justify it. The fight you’re in is evidence that God has not abandoned you.

3. You can’t overcome sin by trying harder — only by surrendering deeper.

You’ve probably told yourself a hundred times, “I’ll do better next time.” But freedom doesn’t come from willpower. It comes from letting Christ live through you. The moment you realize you can’t, and you turn it over to the One who can, that’s when change begins.

4. Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith — giving up is.

Even the greatest heroes of faith had moments of deep doubt. Think of Thomas, David, and Elijah. God didn’t reject them. He met them in their weakness. Bring your doubts to God honestly. He’s not afraid of your questions — He wants your heart.

5. You’re not stuck — you’re being shaped.

What feels like spiritual failure might actually be spiritual formation. Sometimes God allows long seasons of struggle to deepen your dependence on Him. The pain you’re feeling now can be the soil where stronger faith grows later.
