Let me start with something that might make you raise an eyebrow:
The early church would look at how we read the Bible today… and probably be shocked.
Why?
Because for them, Scripture wasn’t a five-minute devotional before rushing off to work. It wasn’t a checklist item. And it certainly wasn’t about picking random verses to fit a mood.
For the early Christians, the Bible was life.
It was survival.
It was the air they breathed.
They didn’t just “read” it — they devoured it. They gathered in secret rooms, dusty courtyards, and candlelit houses, hanging on to every word. Not because they had nothing better to do… but because those words were more precious than life itself.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4, NKJV)
Some of them had never seen a full copy of the Scriptures. Scrolls were rare. Instead, they memorized long passages they heard read aloud and meditated on them day and night. They didn’t just want to “get through the Bible in a year” — they wanted the Bible to get through them.
📢 The Bible will always be our ultimate source of truth — nothing can replace it. But throughout history, God has used other Spirit-filled writings to open our eyes, deepen our understanding, and draw us closer to Him. These books aren’t substitutes for Scripture; they’re companions that can illuminate it in fresh and powerful ways. That’s why I want to invite you to explore my blog, “The ULTIMATE LIST of 50 Best Christian Books of All Time.” Inside, you’ll find life-changing reads that can challenge, inspire, and strengthen your faith starting today.
My Experiment: Reading Like They Did
So, I decided to try it.
No Bible app notifications. No speed-reading. No skipping around for “inspirational” verses.
I chose one book — the Gospel of John — and read it slowly, out loud, sometimes repeating the same passage for days. I listened to it on audio like the early believers would have heard it in gatherings. I let it soak into me instead of rushing past it.
The result?
It was nothing short of life-changing.
Here’s What I Discovered
1. The Word Felt Alive in a New Way
When you read slowly and let the text breathe, it’s like hearing Yahweh speak directly to you. Verses I’d skimmed over for years suddenly gripped my heart. John 10:27 — “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” — hit me like a personal letter from Yahshua.
2. Conviction Became Clearer
Early Christians didn’t read the Bible to “feel good.” They read it to be transformed. As I read with that mindset, I realized how often I approach God’s Word looking for comfort without conviction. But when conviction came, it felt like a loving Father calling me higher, not a harsh critic tearing me down.
3. Scripture Stuck in My Mind
Because I wasn’t rushing, I could recall passages days later without even trying. It’s like my heart had time to “chew” the Word until it became part of me.
Why This Matters for Us Today
We live in a time of Bible abundance but Scripture famine. You and I can access dozens of translations, yet many Christians starve spiritually because we don’t take the time to let God’s Word transform us.
The early church didn’t survive persecution, grow in love, and shake the world because they skimmed Scripture. They were rooted so deeply in it that no trial could uproot them.
If we want faith like theirs, maybe it’s time we read the Bible like they did — slowly, prayerfully, with a hunger that refuses to be satisfied by a quick spiritual snack.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Colossians 3:16, NKJV)
I’ll be honest — this experiment wrecked my old habits. I can’t go back to rushing through the Bible. I’d rather let one chapter change my life than speed through ten chapters and change nothing.
If you’ve been craving a deeper walk with Yahweh…
If you want to hear His voice more clearly…
If you want the fire of the early church in your heart…
Then maybe it’s time to read the Bible like they did.
And while we’re talking about spiritual growth, I’ve put together something that can help fuel that fire — The ULTIMATE LIST of 50 Best Christian Books of All Time. These aren’t just “nice reads.” They’re books that can deepen your faith, challenge your thinking, and inspire you to live fully for Yahshua.
If you’re serious about growing in your walk with God, you don’t want to miss this list.
Amen they met in houses and studied the Bible, at least the Old Testament. there’s a church in California called the rock church, and they had Bible study groups that challenged each believer to stop using media only for work purposes for four weeks and just study the word of God and everybody started hearing from God. Social media has really limited not only our focus, it has limited our attention span, I used to worship Jesus with worship music sometimes for two hours straight now I can’t get past 20 minutes. It is really hindered me. I’m gonna stop using it.
Yes, social media can be a great tool but it can also have negative impact. Let’s be more selective in how we use social media.
