Let’s talk about something that many Christians are either unaware of—or afraid to ask:
What is wrong with the Catholic Bible?
Before you close this tab or think this is just another “attack piece,” let me assure you of one thing:
This isn’t about hate.
It’s about truth.
And if you care about truth—God’s truth—you owe it to yourself to read this.
So grab your Bible, friend. Let’s dive deep.

he Catholic Bible vs. The Christian Bible: What’s the Difference?
At first glance, both Bibles look the same.
Both have Genesis.
Both have Matthew.
Both speak of Yahshua (Jesus), creation, salvation, sin, and redemption.
But here’s the catch:
The Catholic Bible contains more books.
Specifically, it includes seven additional books in the Old Testament. These are commonly called the Deuterocanonical books, and they include:
- Tobit
- Judith
- Wisdom of Solomon
- Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)
- Baruch
- 1 Maccabees
- 2 Maccabees
These books are found in the Apocrypha—a term that means “hidden.”
The Protestant Bible, which most evangelical Christians use, does not include these books. Why?
Let’s rewind history.
A Quick History Lesson (That Matters More Than You Think)
The Hebrew Old Testament, as accepted by Jews (and later by Jesus and the early Church), never included the Apocryphal books.
The Hebrew canon was firmly established centuries before Christ.
But then came the Septuagint—a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, created around 200–300 BC.
The Septuagint included some extra Jewish writings that were floating around at the time—writings that were never considered divinely inspired by the Jewish people themselves.
Fast forward to AD 397, the Council of Carthage officially included these Apocryphal books into what would become the Catholic Bible.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
During the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s, reformers like Martin Luther went back to the original Hebrew texts and noticed these extra books didn’t belong.
They weren’t cited by Jesus. They weren’t used by the Jews. They weren’t supported by consistent doctrine.
So the Reformers made a bold move:
They removed the Apocryphal books from the Bible canon and restored it to its original form.
This wasn’t about subtracting from God’s Word.
It was about protecting it.

So… What’s Wrong With the Catholic Bible?
Here’s the real talk.
There are three major problems with the Catholic Bible:
1. It Includes Books Not Inspired by God
The Apocryphal books contain historical and doctrinal errors.
For example:
- In 2 Maccabees 12:44–45, it teaches that prayers for the dead can help them be loosed from sin. This is where Catholic doctrine about purgatory finds support.
But let me ask you this:
Where in the Bible—God’s true Word—do you find support for purgatory?
You won’t.
Because it isn’t there.
Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV) says:
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
Not purgatory. Not second chances. Judgment. (Of course, there’s more to this verse that should be discussed, but I’ll do that in the future.)
Adding these books introduces confusion, man-made doctrines, and dangerous teachings.
2. It Introduces Doctrines That Contradict the Gospel
One of the biggest concerns with the Catholic Bible is that it opens the door to doctrines that directly oppose the heart of the Gospel.
For instance, the Apocryphal books have been used to justify teachings like prayers for the dead, purgatory, salvation through the sacraments, and even the idea that the righteous can somehow atone for the sins of others.
These are not minor theological footnotes.
They strike at the core of what Yahshua did on the cross.
Let’s be clear:
No amount of religious ritual, no prayer for the deceased, no human effort can replace the finished work of Yahshua the Messiah.
1 Peter 3:18 (NKJV) says:
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God…”
Once. For all. No need for extra mediators, sacraments, or temporary punishments in purgatory.
But the added books in the Catholic Bible subtly shift this focus. They lay the groundwork for man-centered salvation, where grace becomes something to earn, not receive.
This isn’t just doctrinal drift—it’s spiritual danger.
Because if we distort the Gospel, we lose the power to save.
Galatians 1:6–8 (NKJV) gives a chilling warning:
“I marvel that you are turning away so soon… to a different gospel… but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you… let him be accursed.”
That’s serious.
That’s sobering.
And that’s why we cannot ignore this.
3. It Shifts Authority from Scripture to Church Tradition
This might be the most dangerous issue of all—and it’s one many overlook.
The Catholic Bible isn’t just different because of the extra books. It’s different because of what it represents.
By officially including the Apocrypha in their canon, the Catholic Church made a loud, bold claim—one that every Christian needs to hear and examine carefully:
“We—the Church—have the authority to define what belongs in Scripture.”
Let that sink in.
Not God.
Not the original Hebrew manuscripts.
Not the apostles who walked with Yahshua.
But church tradition and councils.
That should alarm us.
Because the moment you give man the power to determine divine truth, you open the floodgates to error, abuse, and deception.
This is how doctrines like:
- Praying to saints,
- Venerating Mary as “Co-Redemptrix,”
- The infallibility of the Pope,
- Purgatory,
- And indulgences…
…all crept into the Church—not because they were found in Scripture, but because tradition made room for them.
But Yahshua had harsh words for this kind of thinking.
Mark 7:6–9 (NKJV):
“This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men…
For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men…”
Did you catch that?
When we elevate tradition above truth, our worship becomes vain. Empty. Powerless.
The Catholic Bible is a tragic example of this. It places man’s decision above God’s revelation. It says, “We can add to what God has said if we feel it’s right.”
But God says otherwise.
Proverbs 30:5–6 (NKJV):
“Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
Do not add to His words,
Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.”
When we allow church tradition to hold equal or greater weight than Scripture, we drift from truth.
We become like a ship unanchored in a storm.
And worst of all?
We begin trusting in institutions instead of Yahweh.
Friend, let me ask you from the heart:
What is your ultimate authority—God’s Word or man’s traditions?
Because you can’t serve both.
Yahshua never pointed people to tradition. He always pointed them to the Word of God.
“It is written…” That’s how He fought temptation.
“Have you not read…” That’s how He corrected error.
He didn’t say, “What does the council teach?”
He said, “What does Scripture say?”
Let that be your standard. Your compass. Your anchor.
Because when everything else shakes, fades, and falls—the Word of God stands forever.
So, Why Is There a Difference?
Because one group chose to stay true to the original Word,
And the other chose to alter it to support their doctrines.
One group sought to reform,
The other to preserve control.
The difference is not just about books. It’s about truth vs. man-made religion.
How Should Christians Respond?
With love. But not with silence.
We don’t mock.
We don’t belittle.
We don’t wage war with words.
But we do speak up.
Because someone’s eternity may hang in the balance.
If a friend is reading a Bible that supports purgatory, indulgences, or prayers to saints—things never taught by Yahshua—we lovingly correct them.
Not to win an argument, but to win a soul.
Jude 1:3 (NKJV) urges us to:
“…contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
Not a revised version of the faith.
Not a faith padded with Apocryphal doctrines.
The faith once delivered.
And friend, that faith is found in the true, complete, and unaltered Word of God.
Final Thoughts: This Isn’t Just About a Book
It’s about your foundation.
Because if your foundation has cracks, the house won’t stand.
Matthew 7:24 (NKJV) reminds us:
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Let’s build on the Rock—Yahshua.
Not on man-made tradition.
Not on questionable texts.
Let’s return to the Bible as it was meant to be:
Pure. Unaltered. Divine.
Have You Been Relying on the Wrong Bible?
If you’ve been reading a Catholic Bible, it’s time to dig deeper.
Don’t take my word for it. Search the Scriptures.
Ask the hard questions.
Because truth doesn’t fear questions.
But error?
Error hides behind tradition and authority.
Let’s be bold.
Let’s be faithful.
Let’s build on truth.
Your salvation is too important to be based on the wrong foundation.
