The Deep Meaning of Psalms 139:17-18: The Thoughts of God For You

Have you ever been caught off guard by just how much God cares for you? Maybe it’s easy to forget when life gets busy or tough, but there’s a truth buried deep in Scripture that reminds us of just how precious we are in the eyes of our Creator.

In Psalms 139:17-18, King David captures the sheer magnitude of God’s thoughts toward us:

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.”

Let’s pause here and think about that for a moment. When David says that God’s thoughts toward us are more than the grains of sand on Earth, what does that really mean?

Two hands gently holding sand, with grains slipping through the fingers, illustrating the immeasurable number of God's thoughts for us. The text overlay reads 'The Meaning of Psalms 139:17-18: The Thoughts of God for You.

Psalms 139:17-18: Can You Count the Sand?

Have you ever walked along a beach and felt the sand between your toes? Imagine trying to count each grain. Impossible, right? Just picture a handful of sand and how quickly it slips through your fingers—already more than you could count.

Now expand that image to the entire beach. Then, take it further: think about the grains of sand not just on that beach, but on every beach in the world. Now, add the deserts, the ocean floors, even the sand on golf courses!

Scientists estimate there are around 7.5 sextillion grains of sand on Earth. That’s a 7 with 17 zeros behind it! Now, imagine each one of those grains represents a single thought that God has about you. Does that not blow your mind?

It’s hard to comprehend that kind of love. To know that the God of the universe thinks about you that much—more than the number of grains of sand—means you are constantly on His mind.

No matter where you are or what you are going through, His thoughts are wrapped around your life, your heart, your struggles, and your joys.

God’s Love Far Exceeds Human Love

I think about my family a lot—my wife, my son. They are always on my mind, and I would do anything for them. But even as much as I love them, I can’t say I think about them with the kind of intensity or frequency that God thinks about us.

Can you imagine loving someone so deeply that your thoughts about them are uncountable? The love we have for each other, no matter how profound, is just a small reflection of the unfathomable love God has for us.

Even the person who loves you most in this world—whether that’s a spouse, a parent, or a close friend—can’t come close to matching the love God has for you.

And that’s not just a nice thing to say to make you feel good; it’s a biblical truth. God’s love goes far beyond human understanding.

The Price God Paid for You

One of the most compelling proofs of God’s love is what He was willing to sacrifice to save us. We often value things based on what they cost. Imagine selling your smartphone for $50, or your car for |$500 pesos.

You’d never do it because you know they are worth much more. Value is determined by the price someone is willing to pay, and God set the ultimate price for you—He gave His only Son.

Think about that for a second: God valued you so much that He sent Jesus to die for your sins. And here’s the amazing part: even if you were the only sinner in the world, Christ would still die for you. That’s how personal and intense His love is. Your worth to God is so great that it equals the life of His Son.

Let that sink in. You are worth everything to God.

You Are Never Alone

There are days when we all feel forgotten or insignificant. Maybe you’ve had moments where you’ve questioned your worth or wondered if anyone really cares. But in those moments, I encourage you to remember Psalm 139:17-18.

When you wake up, God is still with you. When you feel like no one sees you, God sees every part of your heart. His thoughts about you are so vast that they outnumber the grains of sand.

The next time you’re at the beach or anywhere with sand beneath your feet, let it be a reminder: God is thinking about you, and His love for you is beyond measure.
