The High Priest of a better covenant
We read in Hebrews 8:1-6:
1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
In the Old Covenant, the central place of worship is the temple. Even in the days of the human existence of Yahshua, we have seen how beautiful the temple was. It was so majestic that it was considered an architectural marvel.
The Jews took great pride in their temple. It played a huge part in the religious worship of the Jews.
Yet, in all the majesty and beauty of the temple, it is just a physical structure that won’t last forever. In fact, both the first and second temples have been destroyed. They no longer exist.
That’s why the Priesthood of Yahshua is far superior to the priesthood composed of men. Yahshua is the High Priest in heaven. He isn’t the high priest in earthly temples. He is the High Priest of the true tabernacle that Yahweh Himself made!
Aside from that, instead of bringing daily sacrifices like the priests in ancient times, Yahshua gave Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, which He did once and for all.
That’s why Paul, who is believed to be the writer of Hebrews, explained how Christ’s Priesthood far exceeds any priesthood on earth. He has obtained a more EXCELLENT ministry, which was established on better promises. Not only that, but He is our Mediator who goes between us and our Father.
There’s no doubt: Christ’s priesthood is better in every way. Because of this, we can all go to the Father with the confidence that we will receive mercy, love, and grace.
