Todayā€™s reading: Jeremiah 37:13-15

Staying faithful to Godā€™s word

We read in Jeremiah 37:13-15:

13 And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, ā€œYou are defecting to the Chaldeans!ā€

14 Then Jeremiah said, ā€œFalse! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.ā€ But he did not listen to him.

So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes. 15 Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.

Back in the first chapter of Jeremiah, we read about how God encouraged Jeremiah and how he should not be afraid of delivering Godā€™s word to His people.

Now, we can see the consequences of doing the work of God. There will be times when you will be punished for doing what is right and telling people what they needed to hear.

The Kingdom of Judah was nearing its downfall. For their rebellion and disobedience to God, they are doomed to be defeated. God has already warned them of their impending destruction.

Can you imagine being the man who will carry these words to a people who hated God? Jeremiah knew that if he continued to deliver Godā€™s prophetic warning, he would be thrown into prison.

Jeremiah could have easily just kept quiet. He could have just done nothing and let the people perish. Yet, Jeremiah chose to still deliver Godā€™s word and for that, he was accused of defecting to the Chaldeans. He was beaten up and put into prison.

Jeremiah was a different prophet. There were other prophets in Judah, but they were false prophets. You wonā€™t see these false prophets in prison. They were out there enjoying their freedom. These false prophets deliver news and prophecies that people want to hear. Jeremiah delivered a message of doom and gloom.

As we can see, we choose to do what is right no matter the consequences. There would be times when you are NOT rewarded for the good you have done. However, that shouldnā€™t be a reason for us to turn away from God.

Let Jeremiahā€™s story be a good example for us to follow. May we be like Jeremiah, who lived in an evil society, but still chose to walk with God.
