Today’s reading: Jeremiah 29:11

The thoughts of God

We read in Jeremiah 29:11:

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Have you ever asked, “What is God thinking?” Well, here’s the answer. His thoughts are toward us.

While this verse is spoken to the Jews, it can also be applied to us, God’s spiritual Israel. His thoughts toward us, His people, never changed. If He was thinking about us in the past, He is definitely thinking of us today and even in the future.

Notice how God reminds us that He knows what He thinks about us. He said, “toward you.” He didn’t say, “about you.” It means that God’s thoughts are always drifting toward us. His thoughts are preoccupied with our well-being.

Now, what are the thoughts of God for us? He says, “thoughts of peace.” Judah, after being led to captivity, might have thought that God had forgotten them. They might have thought that their lives would continually be about chaos and conflict.

Yet, God’s intention was never to have them get conquered by their enemies. Due to the stubbornness of Judah, they were destroyed. But God wanted them and us to know that His thoughts would be peace for us and not evil.

Aside from that, God’s thought is to give us a future and a hope. In a world filled with evil, it is easy to think that we don’t have a future anymore. It is easy to think that our situation is hopeless.

Yet, God is telling us that you and I have a future and hope. Our future is brighter than our present or past situation. We have a hope to look forward to.

This promise in Jeremiah 29:11 doesn’t guarantee us a life free of worries and pain. Rather, it reminds us that God has a plan for us. We might go through life’s difficulties but will ultimately lead us to His Kingdom and reign with His Son at His coming.

So, whatever you’re going through right now, always remember what God thinks. His thoughts are continually filled with our welfare. He always takes care of us and will surely see us through!
