Today’s reading: 2 Timothy 1:6-7

Stir up the gift of God

We read in 2 Timothy 1:6-7:

6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Each of us is given a gift from God. We all have different gifts, but there’s one Giver and that is Yahweh. Receiving the gift isn’t the end. We don’t keep the gift, hide it, and use it for ourselves.

No, we must and should stir up God’s gift in us and in other people’s lives. Like a drink that has all its sediments at the bottom, if you try to drink it, it doesn’t taste good. You must stir it up to evenly distribute the sediments. That’s when your drink becomes delicious.

In the same manner, if you don’t use God’s gift, you’re just letting it lie down in dormancy. It doesn’t benefit you and it doesn’t benefit anyone. God gave you the gift not to hide it, but to use it.

The Almighty understands that sometimes we don’t use our gifts because of fear. However, in Paul’s letter, we must not fear because that is not what God has given us. He has given us a spirit of power, love, and of sound mind.

You see, there’s nothing to fear because you and I are given power. We have the power of God behind us. God is there to strengthen us. He let us do great things because it is His power that supports us.

God says He gives us the spirit of love. Because of that, we use our gift to serve others. If you truly have love, then you should not have any problem using God’s gift to love others.

Finally, in this verse, Paul tells us that we are given the spirit of sound mind. This means that our mind is at peace and not chaotic. Our mind thinks properly and helps us to make the right decision. It means that God gives us a sound mind filled with His wisdom.

Sound mind here, when we consider its Greek word, also means self-control. Because of God’s spirit, we can control ourselves and not give into negative thinking that may prevent us from God’s gift.

So, the next time you fear and you hesitate in using God’s gift, remember, we are given the spirit of power, love, and of sound mind.

  1. He promised us to do greater work than what He did. Definitely, we must use the gift God has put in us to use on others to fulfill His purpose.
