Today’s reading: Jeremiah 1:6-8

You’re never too young to do God’s work

We read in Jeremiah 1:6-8:

6 Then said I:
“Ah, Lord GOD!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

7 But the LORD said to me:

“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

8 Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD.

According to Bible scholars, Jeremiah might have been 17 to 20 years old when he was called by God to become a prophet. Thus, it is not surprising to see how Jeremiah protested.

Can you imagine a teenager or someone in his early twenties preaching to Israel and other nations? Can you just imagine how Jeremiah, a young man, preached to the more experienced and older people?

The task is no doubt overwhelming. Jeremiah’s response to God was factual. It is true that he was just a young man.

However, God knows exactly what He was doing. Jeremiah’s age wasn’t going to be an issue. Once God calls you, your age doesn’t matter. What matters is obedience to His call.

That’s why God told Jeremiah, “Don’t say you’re young.” The Almighty can use anyone, like Jeremiah, to do His work. Age doesn’t matter when you have God backing you up.

Jeremiah’s reluctance to do God’s work was rooted in fear. He was afraid of what people would say to him. He was afraid of how they would respond. He was afraid that his age would hinder him from fully doing God’s work.

Yet, the Almighty said, “Do not be afraid of their faces.” God assured Jeremiah that He will be with Him. And that should be more than enough for Jeremiah to accept God’s assignment for him.

Don’t let your age get in the way of answering God’s call.

Your job is to follow God. Let God handle the rest.
