Today’s reading: Isaiah 64:6

Filthy rags

We read in Isaiah 64:6:

6 But we are all like an unclean thing,
And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags;

We all fade as a leaf,
And our iniquities, like the wind,
Have taken us away.

Looking into the Hebrew word, the expression filthy rags actually refer to garments of menstruation. This graphic description of the righteousness of man seems to be exaggerated, but that’s how the Bible describes reality.

You see, one may take pride in how good and righteous he/she is. Some may brag that they are not as bad as others. They don’t steal, kill, commit adultery, or do anything that is worth getting you in jail.

However, we can read that even the most righteous acts that we do are simply “filthy rags” in comparison to God’s righteousness. Thus, we should never rely on our righteousness to get saved. We should not boast of our righteousness before God and men.

Think about this for a second, if our righteousness is called filthy rags, how filthy and dirty could our unrighteousness be? If the best that we can do is still not enough, how much more is the worst that we do?

What we must realize is that it is not our righteousness that will bring us to God’s Kingdom. We are given the opportunity to receive eternal life because of the grace, love, and mercy of the Most High God.

We must stop focusing on our righteousness, but on God’s righteousness. There’s a reason why Yahshua instructed us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and HIS righteousness.”

God’s righteousness is far greater than ours. Our righteousness doesn’t deserve to be compared to God’s righteousness. When we understand this biblical truth, we can begin to better appreciate God’s mercy and love toward us.
