Today’s reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:10-11

Don’t feed the lazy

We read in 2 Thessalonians 3:10-11:

10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.

The Almighty expects us to work with our hands so that we can provide for ourselves and other people. Paul made it clear that if anyone will not work, he should not eat.

Notice, Paul said, “will not work.” He didn’t say, “can’t work.” This means that a person who willingly chooses not to work but in reality can work, should not be given food.

This tells us one important lesson: we should strive not to be a burden to other people. As much as possible, let us be a blessing to others.

Paul added that those who are not working are the same people who walk in a disorderly manner. These people are busy but not busy for the wrong reasons.

As you can see, the laziness of these busybodies has become a source of sin for others. Since they have idle time on their hands, they use this as an opportunity to take advantage of others. It is not good for a person to live by the sweat and hard work of others.

If you are able to work, then work. Look for a way to earn a living. You do it not to simply feed yourself, but also to be a source of blessing to others who may need your help.

When we follow the command of not feeding the lazy, we are actually teaching that person a lesson. When we simply tolerate his/her laziness, that person will simply continue in his/her ways, without seeing the need to change.

We serve a productive and busy God. If we are going to follow God, we also need to follow this part of His character. We should also be busy, not lazy, to be productive, and not sedentary.
