Today’s reading: Galatians 3:26-29

There is neither Jew nor Greek

We read in Galatians 3:26-29:

26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Paul’s revolutionary statement is powerful. There’s neither Jew nor Greek. In short, there’s no distinction anymore. Once we are all in Christ, we should not divide ourselves into categories that separate us.

All their lives, the Jews believed that they are a special people, that the promise was made to them and for them. Even devout Jews at that time include in their prayer of thankfulness for not being a gentile.

Yet, Paul was saying that God plays no favoritism. Salvation is not only for the Jews but also for the Gentiles. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we are all standing equal before God — equal in terms of having the same opportunity to be part of God’s Kingdom.

If that wasn’t enough, Paul was saying that there’s neither slave nor free, male nor female. Paul was teaching the Galatians that our brotherly love shouldn’t be limited by our status in life. We don’t become nice to rich people and rude to the poor. We can’t put special preference on males and not on females.

If we are of Christ’s, then we are spiritually considered as Abraham’s seed. Because we are part of God’s people, then we become co-heirs of God’s promised reward.

It is not our lineage and cultural heritage that saves us. It is Christ’s sacrifice and our faith in God.

Therefore, there’s neither Jew nor Greek. We all have the same opportunity to be part of God’s family.
