Today’s reading: Ecclesiastes 7:21

Don’t listen to all the things people say about you

We read in Ecclesiastes 7:21:

21 Also do not take to heart everything people say,
Lest you hear your servant cursing you.

One of the best ways for you to waste your time is to always take note of what others say about you. It doesn’t just waste time, but also energy and resources — things you could have used for other better things.

As one wise person says, “You can’t reach your destination if you throw stones at every dog that barks in your path.” If you are too concerned with all the things people say about you, you’ll be too consumed to prove them wrong if you don’t like what they say or keep them pleased.

We should remember that not all the time will say the wisest thing. Not everyone is wise all the time. People will say foolish things — things you should not pay attention to.

Moreover, most people don’t really know who you are, what your struggles are, and what your priorities are. Why do you need to listen to them when all they do is criticize and destroy you?

Of course, there are times when people say the right things that will benefit you. Those are the times that they are worth listening to. However, once they start talking foolishness, it’s wiser to simply ignore them.

Stop listening to gossipers, detractors, talebearers, backbiters, and whisperers. Don’t take to heart what they are saying. If someone has something bad to say about you, don’t waste your time proving them wrong. What they say is a reflection of themselves, not you.

It takes a lot of wisdom to know which people you should listen to. It takes wisdom what words you should take to heart. It takes wisdom to take the high ground and not stoop down to the level of people who don’t have anything to do but criticize others.

Ultimately, what we should take to heart is everything that Yahweh says. That’s what deserves our attention, energy, and time.
