Today’s reading: Psalms 23:1

The LORD is my Shepherd

We read in Psalms 23:1:

1 The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want.

The 23rd chapter of Psalms is among the most beloved, known, and inspiring chapters in the Bible and it started with the statement, “Yahweh is my shepherd.”

It’s quite striking how David named God. He wants to be specific. He wants everyone to know that it is Yahweh, the living and eternal God, who serves as his shepherd.

We can see here that David didn’t simply say, “Yahweh is the shepherd.” No, he made it personal. He said, “Yahweh is MY shepherd.”

Since God is your shepherd and my shepherd, we can have the confidence that He looks upon us. He takes care of us. He protects us. He loves us.

David chose the analogy of God being our shepherd. In the ancient world, being a shepherd wasn’t a glamorous job. In fact, it was considered to be among the lowest occupations.

This tells us that even God isn’t hesitant to stoop down to our level just to reach out to us. This is proven when Yahshua, a majestic and great God, stripped Himself of divinity and took the form of a lowly human being.

Indeed, God is willing to give even the greatest sacrifice of His Son’s life to invite us into His family.

And because Yahweh is our Shepherd, we shall not want. In other words, we won’t lack anything. We are sufficient. All our needs would be met. All that is necessary for us to be part of God’s Kingdom is given to us. God supplies every good gift.

Since Yahweh is our Shepherd, we can be at rest. We can have genuine joy, peace, and blessings — things that no amount of money can ever buy.

So, the next time you’re going through life’s trouble, just say, “Yahweh is my Shepherd.”
