Today’s reading: Acts 17:10-12

Be like the Bereans

We read in Acts 17:10-12:

10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

The writer of Acts described the Bereans as fair-minded or noble because of two things:

  • They received the word with all readiness of mind
  • They searched the Scriptures daily to find out the truth

The Bereans have prepared their mind to listen to what Paul and Silas preached. They were not biased. They want to hear both sides of the story.

Once they have received the teachings of Paul and Silas, they didn’t simply accept them as truth. They made sure that they were the truth!

Searching the Scripture isn’t a one-time event for the Bereans. It was part of their character. The Bereans were diligent in studying the Word of God. They searched the Scriptures not once a week, but they did it daily!

As a result of the attitude of the Bereans, many believed, both Jews and Greeks.

As followers of Yahshua today, one thing we must learn from the Bereans is to prove all things. We must always be open to correction and new learning. We study the Scripture and investigate. We want to know the truth and we can only do that with all readiness of mind and the dedication to search the Bible regularly.
