Today’s reading: John 3:30

He must increase

We read in John 3:30:

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

This is a simple yet profound statement of humility coming from John the Immerser/Baptizer.

John understood well the purpose of his ministry. He wasn’t threatened by the growing influence of Yahshua.

However, for his followers, this seemed to be an issue. Since John is the forerunner of the Messiah, it was expected that he already had a growing number of followers.

We read in John 3:25-26:

25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”

John made it clear that he isn’t the Christ. We read in John 3:29:

29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.

The joy of John was for people to find Christ. That’s when he said that he must decrease and let Yahshua increase.

The same attitude and principle should reign in our lives. In every day of our existence, we must let ourselves decrease and let Yahshua increase in us.

We read in Philippians 2:5:

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Yahshua.

Our aim is to have the mind of Yahshua. Since He lives in us, we must let Him direct our paths, guide our actions, and inspire us into obedience.

When we tell God, “I must decrease and you increase,” it means, we become less of ourselves and more of Yahweh. It means that we get rid of our human nature and let God’s nature be in us.

Like a sculptor who chisels and chips away from the unnecessary parts of his sculpture, we must also get rid of our human nature bit by bit until we become like the spiritual sculpture of God.

May we all have this goal in life:

“I must decrease. He must increase.”
