Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 21:2

Sincerely wrong

A lot of Christians today are sincere and zealous in their religion. The problem is that their sincerity is rooted in falsehood. Having a great zeal doesn’t automatically mean that you are doing right.

We read in 2 Samuel 21:2:

2 So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; the children of Israel had sworn protection to them, but Saul had sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.

Saul was zealous but it was a misguided zeal that led him to forget the promise Israel made to Gibeonites and kill them. This is a classic example of how good intentions don’t excuse bad actions.

Sometimes, we excuse wrongdoings simply because the intention was good. However, for God, good intentions aren’t enough. It must be based on God’s will and commandments.
