Today’s reading: Joshua 14:12

Give me this mountain

We read in Joshua 14:12:

12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said.

Caleb was one of the two out of twelve spies who gave a good report to Israel. It’s quite interesting how in Joshua 14, we read how Caleb “wholly followed Yahweh Elohim” (verses 8, 9, 14).

That’s three times.

This confirms the heart of Caleb and how he followed God completely. The twelve tribes saw the same thing. They saw the same land, cities, and people.

The problem was that the ten spies never used their eyes of faith and caused Israel to wander in the wilderness for forty years. The ten spies measured the strength of the enemies against them but Caleb measured the strength of the enemies against Yahweh.

For forty-five years, Caleb had kept in his heart the yearning to conquer the same people whom the ten spies thought to be unconquerable.

He had this vision that one day, he will go up and show the rest of the world that God indeed is able to conquer even the giants of the land.

Now, he is 85 years old, and Caleb’s confidence in God never waned. Finally, it is time to claim Hebron. He knew exactly what he wanted and now, after forty-five years, he was ready to take on the land.

We can all learn a lot of lessons from Caleb. No matter how long it takes, God will fulfill His promise. No matter how old you are, God can still use you. No matter how strong the enemies are, God can defeat them for you.
