Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 26:16

Obedience from the heart

We read in Deuteronomy 26:16:

16 “This day the LORD your God commands you to observe these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall be careful to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.

From the beginning, Yahweh wanted us to follow Him from the heart.

Notice, the Almighty wants us to follow Him with all our hearts and with all our souls.

For what reason?

Simply because it is the commandment of God.

When we keep the law out of an unwilling heart, we become hypocritical. It sets us up for more temptation.

If we are not obeying God from the heart, we can easily give in to temptation when it becomes harder to follow God.

You see, following God’s commandments is not simply done out of compliance.

We don’t do it simply because we are afraid to get punished or we are pressured by our family and friends.

We do it out of love for God.

That’s why it says, obeying God from the heart.

When you serve your family, you don’t do it because you are simply forced to do it, right?

When you feed your children, when you put food on the table, when you make sacrifices, you do it willingly because why? Because you love your family.

The same is true when it comes to following God.

We don’t mind making sacrifices. We don’t mind suffering. We don’t even mind if we get anything in return.

That’s what it means to obey God with all our hearts and souls.
