Today’s reading: Exodus 17:8-13
How God’s Power Should Move Us
We read in Exodus 19:16-19:
16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
18 Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.
19 And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice.
In Exodus 19, we read about how God presented himself to Israel with thick clouds, thunderings, flashes of lightning, trumpet sounds, and trembling of the ground.
We see here the tremendous power displayed by God to the point that the children of Israel were afraid. They asked Moses to let God not speak to them.
Now, Yahweh didn’t show His power to simply scare the people, but to instill in their mind the respect, awe, and reverence they must have toward God.
Sometimes, we also forget how majestic and powerful God is. So many people treat God as if He is nothing but a piece of wood or stone.
Truly, God is loving, merciful, and graceful. However, we must not also lose sight of the fact that He is the most powerful Being in the entire universe.
This should instill in us a sense of high respect and awe to God but at the same time, we can trust and have confidence in God for His plan of salvation will ultimately come to pass.
