FREE EBOOK promo footnote.pngWe know Him as God the Father.

However, how many of us really know what that means? Do you know what it means to call Yahweh, the Eternal, Almighty, and Supreme Ruler of the vast universe as your Father?

Sadly, some of us have a wrong picture of what a true father is. As we look around us, it seems that we have a shortage of godly model of fatherhood. According to one statistics, 1 out of 3 children lives without their biological father. For some who have a father, they might be abusive and irresponsible.

Thus, it is not difficult to see why so many people today don’t understand what it feels like to have a father – so much more having a Father in heaven.

For this reason, I would like to share with you 5 powerful ways how God is a Father to all of us. This blog post will remind us that we have a spiritual Father who will never leave us nor forsake us.

How God is a Father to Us

God is our Father. Do you know what it means? Let this blog explain it to you.

Point no. 1: God loves us

Among the most popular verses in the Bible is John 3:16. It reads:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

This verse alone has been translated into hundreds of languages. Most Christians are familiar with this and they even memorize it.

John 3:16 expresses the type of love God has for all of us. He loves us so much that He gave up His only begotten Son.

Can you, as a father, imagine the incredible pain God has to endure just to give rebellious and sinful human beings a chance for salvation?

I John 4:8 tells us:

“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

The embodiment of love is God. God is not just loving, but He is actually LOVE Himself!

Every action of God is motivated by love.

As a Father, His love for us is beyond any word could express. His love is unconditional and unending. He is too eager to start a close relationship with all of us.

Point no. 2: God gives us life

God the Father is rightly called to be our Father because He gave us life and He continues to give it to us. Every single moment of our lives is a gift from God. He sustains us and renews our strength day by day (Isaiah 40:31).

To ultimately make my point clearer, God is our Father because He created us through His Son Yahshua the Messiah or Jesus Christ.

We read in Ephesians 3:9 tells us:

“And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ.”

Since God gives us life, He is our Father. This is supported by what Malachi wrote:

Have we not all one Father?
Has not one God created us?

Why do we deal treacherously with one another
By profaning the covenant of the fathers” (Malachi 2:10)?

God indeed gives life to all things (I Timothy 6:13). For that, we must be thankful each waking moment in our life as we can always be joyful to know that God is our Father who gives us life.

Point no. 3: We can always communicate with God

Have you been invited to have a private meeting with the President of your country? How about being invited to a royal banquet by a monarch? Or perhaps, you seek to have an audience with someone who is so important?

Isn’t it amazing that we don’t need to set an appointment to talk to the most powerful Being in the entire universe? You don’t have to go through the hassle and stress of setting a meeting to the one true God.

All you have to do is say a prayer! Wherever you are and whatever you do, you can always talk to God!

Do you know of any father who is simply available any day of the week and any time of the day? I’m sure you don’t know anyone is like that.

But our Father in Heaven is always available to listen to you. You can share with Him your triumphs and failures. You can share with Him your joy and sadness. You can talk to Him about your plans, dreams, and the desires of your heart. You can tell Him both the big and small details of your life.

That’s how God is a Father to all of us!

The writer of Hebrews tells us:

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

If we talk to God through prayer, God also talks to us through His Word – the Bible.

We read in II Timothy 3:16-17:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Through the word of God, we can know more about what God expects us to do and what we must do to fulfill His purpose in our lives.

Like a Father, we can always talk to God and also listen to His instructions to us through the Bible.

Point no. 4: God disciplines us

One cannot truly say that he loves his children without tough love. Part of loving a child is discipline and that’s exactly what God our Father also does to us.

I would like to share with you Hebrews 12:5-11. Though this passage is kind of lengthy, I highly encourage you to read every word as it perfectly describes how God is being a Father to us through discipline.

And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

“My son, DO NOT DESPISE THE CHASTENING OF THE LORD,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”

From this verse, we are told that God chastens us because HE LOVES US (pointing us back to point no. 1).

(You might also be interested in this blog: The Question the Pope did not Answer.)

The passage continues, “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.”

Now, think about this for a second. If God does not correct you, you are considered to be an illegitimate child. God is NOT your real father if you are not disciplined.

Verse 9 tells us:

Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He FOR OUR PROFIT, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

God does not punish us out of caprice or whim. He does not get any pleasure from punishing us.

There’s a purpose why He is correcting us and that’s for us to learn a lesson. In short, it is for our own good.

When God sees that our behavior is leading to destruction, instead of letting us continue, He corrects our path through pain. Sometimes, it takes a trial for God to get our attention. It takes tribulation to soften and bend our knees and tears to clear our vision.

As Paul mentioned, the chastening we experience today may be unpleasant, but it will ultimately lead to holiness. After the painful correction, we produce the fruit of righteousness.

That’s the importance of God’s discipline.

If He doesn’t love us, He will just let us destroy ourselves. Without correction, we will continue in our evil ways which will ultimately lead to our physical and spiritual death.

As a father to my son, I’d rather spank him and correct his bad behavior. It is better for him to suffer in my hands rather than he suffers in the hands of other people. Yes, it hurts me to see my son cry every time I spank him, but it is ultimately for his own good.

So, instead of despising the discipline of our Heavenly Father, we must be thankful for the correction. Let’s be glad for God’s love, which is demonstrated through chastening.

Point no. 5: God rewards us

God isn’t an angry father who only notices us when we have done something wrong. Yes, it is true that God disciplines us when it is necessary, but the other side of that is that He rewards us as well when we do something good. He even blesses us even if we are not deserving of it!

We read in Hebrews 11:6:

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Now, God does not reward us simply because we did something or because of our own effort. He rewards us because He loves us. Blessings come naturally as a result of doing what is good and pleasing in His sight.

Like a human father, God wants to see us succeed in life. He does not just watch us succeed, but He also helps us achieve our goals, provided that they are in line with His will and purpose.

The best thing about God is that He does not just reward us during this lifetime, but also in the life to come. God’s ultimate gift is the gift of eternal life and the chance to be part of His Kingdom forever.

John 17:3 tells us:

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

The Apostle John claims that no one can have the eternal life without knowing God the Father and His Son, Yahshua/Jesus Christ.

John 3:16 tells us the reward of having eternal life:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Point no. 6: God provides our needs

Like our human father, God as a Father also provides our needs. We can always have the confidence that God will supply all that we need in this life.

We read in Philippians 4:19:

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

One of my favorite scripture reads:

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. NO GOOD THING DOES HE WITHHOLD FROM THOSE WHO WALK UPRIGHTLY” (Psalms 84:11).

God will give every good thing to you. If you ask anything and God didn’t grant it, then it must be something that won’t be in your best interest.

(Please consider reading this as well: The Lessons We Learn from Unanswered Prayer.)

James 1:17 confirms this:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

With all these in mind, if you need something, you can always go to God and ask for it. He will provide all the things necessary for us to do His will and even grant the desires of our hearts.

For this reason, we shouldn’t worry about where we should get our food,  the clothes we wear, and the house where we should live. God will provide all those as long as we also do our part and follow His will in our lives.

Point no. 7: God will always be with us

God is the best father there is.

Why?

Because even if every single person in your life leaves you, He will still be with you always.

Notice what Hebrews 13:5 tells us:

God, Himself said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

I believe that’s the most comforting words in the Bible. It shows us the unending care, mercy, and love of God toward us.

And because God is our Father who will not leave us, we shouldn’t be afraid nor be discouraged (Deuteronomy 31:8). He even commanded us to be STRONG and COURAGEOUS (Joshua 1:9).

Final words

These are just some of the wonderful and amazing ways God is a Father to all of us. It is a great privilege to call our God our Father. He is our provider, comforter, and protector. (Open this related blog in a new tab: 15 Non-Negotiable Qualities of Christian Men.)

With all the points I mentioned, I hope you will get a better understanding of how God is our Father and how we can always go near Him and call Him Abba, Father.

I’d like to leave you with this inspiring message written by Paul:

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together (Romans 8:15-17).

  1. Those are all amazing properties for a god to have! Something I’m missing though (personally) is that he isn’t noticeable. If He was noticeable, i.e, if his existence seemed more probable than his inexistente, we’d all be saved. There would be no reason for anyone NOT to believe in him. There would be no reason for anyone NOT to love him, and to spend each and every day with the sole purpose of pleasing Him. To bad it’s not that way though.

    • Hi Anonymous,

Man has the choice whether they will obey God or not, whether they will call God as their Father or not. Human nature will always find a way to believe that God does not exist.

It is up to you to heed God’s calling or not. No one is forcing you even God won’t force you. We all have free will.

      Regards,
      Joshua
