More than ever, it is very easy to view pornography with just one click of a button and in the comfort of our homes. If we are going to overcome porn, we have to turn to the Bible and learn useful Biblical principles that we can use. Let me share with you some of these principles.

1. Avoid triggers

Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” (I Corinthians 6:18).

When Joseph was seduced by Potiphar’s wife, he didn’t just stand in the room or walk away, but rather, he fled! Sexual temptation is among the strongest impulses in our brain. Therefore, we need to proactively get away from pornography in the strongest way possible. Walking away is NEVER enough. We need to RUN and FLEE.

The practical ways to apply this are:

  • Place your computer in a room where everyone can see it.
  • Install anti-pornography software. K9 Web Protection is free.
  • Avoid places or situations that you know will lead you to temptation.
  • DESTROY or eliminate pornographic materials in your possession.

2. Don’t be too confident

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (I Corinthians 10:12).

If you think you are too strong for any sexual temptation, you better think twice. The Bible tells us that we need to stand our ground if we don’t want to fall into temptation. Therefore, we need to get out of the sexually tempting situation the minute we see the first sign. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

3. Make yourself accountable to others

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

Watching pornography is very convenient, and we can enjoy doing it in the privacy of our homes. In most cases, this type of sin is a private sin and telling other people about it can be very CHALLENGING!

As this might be the case, this is also the most efficient way to overcome this problem. When you recognize your problem, accept it, and seek the support and help of other people, you will have an increased chance of being victorious.

It is important that you have someone who will hold you accountable for your actions. It is advisable that that person should be someone you respect and trust. You can ask your pastor, elders, parents, spouse, and friends.

4. Pray to God

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and PRAY for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

Overcoming pornography can be difficult without the help of God. Here are 5 Biblical principles you should know to overcome pornography addiction.Pornography addiction can be considered as a mental disease and like any other diseases, it has many detrimental effects on your life. We need to recognize that if we are going to overcome pornography addiction, it will be through the power of God. Therefore, it is very crucial for us to pray.

When we feel the urge to watch porn, BEND YOUR KNEES AND PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER. Pray to God to give you the necessary strength to overcome this dreadful sin. God is able and is more than willing to help you. He is just one prayer away.

5. Develop godly habits

“That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,  and that you PUT ON THE NEW MAN which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24).

Habits are not eliminated, but rather they are replaced. For this reason, if you want to overcome pornography, you need to replace this bad habit with a good habit.

Keep yourself busy. Spend your extra energy to more profitable, meaningful, and godly activities. Don’t let yourself get bored. Remember that an idle mind is the devil’s playground. Keep yourself company with other godly individuals. Commit more time to reading God’s word and doing His work.

When you do these, you will less likely entertain the thoughts of watching pornography.

You can overcome!

When it comes to overcoming pornography addiction, you can obtain comfort from this scripture:

“God is faithful, who will NOT allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (I Corinthians 10:13).

According to this verse, God will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able. If you are being tempted to watch porn now, God knows that you can overcome it. He believes in you, and He knows that you are better than wasting your time watching garbage.

God is faithful, and He will do what He said. If you feel like the temptation is so strong, then be happy because that’s how much God believes in you. In every temptation you encounter, God will make a way of escape.

So always keep I Corinthians 10:13 and all the five Biblical principles I shared. I sincerely pray that you and all the Christians out there will be able to overcome pornography addiction.
