Psalm 91: God’s Promised Protection For His People

There is no doubt that this world is getting more dangerous each passing day. I don’t have to go very far just to prove this. Just in our place alone, bomb threats are hurling around. Currently, our government is having peace talks with rebel groups and there are other people who do not want this to happen; thus, they plant bombs all over Mindanao Island to disrupt the peace process. Just one or two town from our city, we hear news of the military clashing with the militant groups.

Terrorism in the Middle East.

In addition to this war going on, crime rates are on the rise. Almost everyday, I hear someone being robbed and even killed in case that person would fight back. Our local authorities remain toothless against crimes happening in our city.

This is only in our place. Everyday, there is no day that passes by without me hearing bad news from the Middle East. The things happening to that place will directly or indirectly affect all of us since most world economies greatly rely on oil.

I know you can relate to what I am talking about. In your own neighborhood, you also have similar stories to mine. Everywhere we go, we can see bad things happening – bad things that even happen to good people.

This is truly a perilous and frightening time. In the midst of all these troubles, where can we get our comfort? Where can we find protection? Most importantly, what should be our mindset when we look at the problems all around us?

This morning, I unintentionally came across with Psalm 91. Though this portion of the Bible is written thousands of years ago, the written words still holds true to us today. I obtain comfort from Psalm 91 because it is very applicable to us Christians who are facing dangers in this world ruled by satan.

Our ultimate protection comes from God. There is no better place in this world than in the presence of God. As Christians, we shall never be afraid because we have the God of this vast universe looking after us. Read Psalm 91 with the intent to really understand each word written here. Read it through your Bible and I am sure that you will have the same comfort as what I have obtained. (*smile)

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress:

My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler

And from the perilous pestilence.

He shall cover you with His feathers,

And under His wings you shall take refuge;

His truth shall be your shield and buckler,

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,

And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it shall not come near you.

Only with your eyes shall you look,

And see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,

Even the most high, your dwelling place,

No evil shall befall you,

Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

For He shall give His angels charge over you,

To keep you in all your ways.

In their hands they shall bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,

The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver Him;

I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble;

I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him,

And show him My salvation.
