Why does God say “No”

The other night, we went out to eat with some visiting relatives.

While waiting, I noticed this sign: “No Parking.”

At first, a sign like this can feel restrictive.

It tells you what you cannot do.

You can’t park here.

You have to keep moving.

But then I thought about why the sign was there.

Maybe parking in that spot would block traffic.

Maybe it would create a danger.

Maybe it would inconvenience someone else.

The restriction wasn’t meant to make life harder. It was there to protect people.

And perhaps that’s how we should look at some of God’s commandments.

Sometimes we see God’s “no” and think we’re missing out.

We wonder why God won’t let us do what we want.

But what if His boundaries aren’t designed to rob us of something good?

What if some of God’s “no’s” are actually protecting us from something we cannot yet see?

A child may think a parent is being unfair when told not to touch something dangerous.

The child sees the restriction.

The parent sees the danger.

God sees what we cannot.

So the next time God says “No,” don’t immediately assume He’s keeping something good from you.

Sometimes, His “no” is simply another way of saying, “I love you too much to let you go there.”
