Joy is supposed to be one of the defining marks of a Christian life. And yet, if we’re honest, many believers walk around weary, burdened, and spiritually drained. They go to church, read the Bible, serve in ministries—and still feel like something’s missing.

So what happened? Why does it seem like joy slips away so easily?
Here’s the truth: The one reason Christians lose their joy is because they’ve lost sight of the Source.
It sounds simple, but it’s profoundly true. Joy isn’t a mood you manufacture—it’s a gift that flows from being close to Yahweh. When we stop abiding in Him, when we allow distractions, stress, sin, or self-reliance to take over, we naturally drift from the wellspring of joy.
Yahshua said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). But notice the context—He said this right after teaching about abiding in Him. Staying connected. Remaining in His love and truth.
The problem is, we often settle for doing things for God while forgetting to spend time with God.
We chase productivity, performance, or even religious activities, thinking they’ll fill the gap. But joy isn’t found in doing more. It’s found in drawing near. When prayer becomes routine, worship becomes passive, and the Word becomes background noise, it’s no wonder our joy dries up.
King David knew this all too well. After falling into sin, he cried out, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation” (Psalm 51:12). That joy was missing not because Yahweh changed—but because David had strayed. The good news? It can be restored. Always.
So ask yourself today:
- Am I going through the motions while drifting from the Source?
- When was the last time I sat still in God’s presence—just to enjoy Him?
- Have I confused happiness with true, spiritual joy?
Friend, don’t let anything—not even ministry, family, or stress—rob you of the deep, lasting joy that comes from Yahweh. Return to Him. Slow down. Abide. That’s where your joy begins again.
