How the World Will End in 72 Minutes (And Why It Will Not)

Imagine this:

You’re sipping your morning coffee. The sun is rising. Your kids are laughing in the other room.

Then suddenly — in the time it takes to microwave a bowl of oatmeal — the countdown to global annihilation begins.

72 minutes.

That’s all it takes.

In her bone-chilling book, Nuclear War: A Scenario, national security author Annie Jacobsen walks us minute-by-minute through what a nuclear war could actually look like. It’s not some sci-fi fantasy or post-apocalyptic Hollywood blockbuster. It’s alarmingly realistic. Terrifyingly plausible.

According to Jacobsen, the nightmare begins with a single decision. One madman. One missile. North Korea targets the Pentagon — and a nuclear reactor in California — just to make a point. Within moments, America is forced into reaction mode. The president has six minutes to make a life-altering choice.

Six minutes.

While he’s being rushed to safety, he’s being urged by military advisors to strike back. And once the missiles launch? They fly over Russia — which then assumes it’s being attacked. So they retaliate. And on it goes. Like dominoes soaked in gasoline.

By the 72-minute mark, the world has burned.
Billions are dead.
The sky goes black.
The sun stops shining.
Food stops growing.
Human civilization, as we know it, collapses.

It’s a horrifying possibility.
And the worst part?
It’s not far-fetched.

One unstable leader.
One accidental launch.
One technological glitch.
And boom — we’re in it.

That’s what makes Jacobsen’s book so disturbing. It’s not just theory. It’s a wake-up call. A brutal reminder of how fragile life on Earth really is when the deadliest weapons ever created are in the hands of very fallible, very emotional human beings.

But here’s the thing…

As frightening as all of that sounds — and it is frightening — let me tell you something:

This is not how the world will end.

Yes, nuclear war may happen.
Yes, great tribulation will come.
Yes, mankind may bring this planet to the brink of extinction.

But that’s not the final chapter.

Not according to Jesus Christ.

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.”
Matthew 24:21-22, NKJV

Did you catch that?
“Unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved.”
Jesus saw this moment coming. He knew that one day, humanity would have the power to destroy itself.

But He also made a promise:
For the sake of His people, He will not let it happen.

Let that sink in.

What comes after?

The end of this world doesn’t mean the end of life.
It means the end of man’s way of life.
The end of corrupt governments.
The end of selfish leadership.
The end of systems that serve profit over people.

What replaces it?
A Kingdom.
A perfect one.

“And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.”
Daniel 7:27, NKJV

That’s our future.
That’s our hope.
That’s why the world won’t end in 72 minutes.

Because God has a plan.
And that plan doesn’t involve total annihilation — it involves total transformation.

So, what do we do now?

We prepare.
Not by building bunkers or stockpiling canned goods.
But by understanding the times we’re living in.
By waking up spiritually.
By turning to the One who holds the future in His hands.

Final Thoughts

It’s tempting to live in fear.
To feel helpless.
To believe that we’re just sitting ducks in a nuclear game of chicken.

But friend, let me remind you:

God isn’t pacing the heavens nervously.
He isn’t caught off guard.
He isn’t wringing His hands at our foolishness.

He is in control.
And while the kingdoms of men may crumble in minutes…
The Kingdom of God will stand forever.

So next time you hear about missiles, madmen, and mass destruction, remember:

They may shake the world —
But they will never stop God’s plan.
