5 Sure Steps to Know the Will of God

Have you ever found yourself wondering what God wants you to do?

It’s one of those big questions that can keep you up at night, isn’t it?

You’re sitting there, looking at your life, at all the decisions, opportunities, and crossroads, and you think, “What does God really want from me?”

I get it.

I’ve been there too. And let me tell you: finding God’s will isn’t as mysterious as we sometimes make it out to be.

Step 1: Know His Word

The first step to knowing the will of God?

Open your Bible.

God has already revealed so much of His will for us right there in the pages of Scripture.

It’s not hidden.

You don’t have to go on a treasure hunt for it.

If you want to know what God desires, you need to know what He’s said.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

Think about that for a second.

God’s Word illuminates the steps you need to take.

You don’t need to see the whole staircase—just the next step.

The Bible teaches us to love others, to serve, to live righteously, to forgive.

These are not just good ideas; they are God’s will for your life.

But, you might be thinking, “That’s great, but I still don’t know what job to take, who to marry, or where to live.”

I get it.

There are specific situations in life where we feel lost, and that’s where the next steps come in.

WILL OF GOD

Step 2: Pray for Guidance

You know, prayer is more than just tossing up requests.

It’s a conversation with God, and it’s one of the most powerful ways to align your heart with His.

When you seek God’s will through prayer, you’re not just asking for answers.

You’re opening yourself up to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

You need wisdom?

God’s got plenty, and He’s not stingy with it.

He wants to lead you.

But here’s the kicker: Are you listening?

It’s not enough to pray and then go about your day without expecting an answer.

Quiet your heart.

Be still.

Let God speak.

He may use that still, small voice, or He might use circumstances, people, or even a strong conviction in your heart to direct you.

Step 3: Follow Peace

One of the clearest ways to know if you’re on the right path is to follow the peace God gives. Colossians 3:15 says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”

It’s like this: when you’re about to make a decision, ask yourself, “Do I feel peace about this?” Not the kind of peace the world gives—the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

If you feel uneasy or unsettled, that could be a sign God is steering you away from something and it could be not the will of God.

If you feel a deep sense of peace, even if the situation is challenging or scary, that could be God’s way of saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Step 4: Seek Godly Counsel

Sometimes, we think we can figure everything out on our own. But the Bible is clear:

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).

It’s wise to surround yourself with other believers—people who love God, know His Word, and live their lives for Him.

Sometimes God speaks to us through the wisdom of others.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to a pastor, mentor, or a trusted friend and ask for their perspective.

But here’s the thing: make sure they’re grounded in God’s Word.

You don’t want advice based on feelings or worldly wisdom.

You want counsel that aligns with Scripture and points you back to God.

Step 5: Look at Your Circumstances

God can also guide you through your circumstances.

Now, I’m not saying that every closed door is a “no” from God, or that every open door is a “yes.”

But He can use what’s happening around you to point you in the right direction.

For instance, you may have prayed for a certain job, but it didn’t work out.

Instead of seeing that as a failure, recognize that maybe God is closing that door for a reason.

Maybe He’s protecting you from something you can’t see, or maybe He’s leading you to something better.

Romans 8:28 reminds us that “in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

God is weaving everything together for your good, even when things don’t make sense in the moment.

Bonus step: Trust in God’s Timing

Here’s the part that might challenge you the most: waiting.

We live in a world that wants answers now, but God doesn’t work on our schedule.

Sometimes, you just have to wait.

And let me tell you, waiting can be hard.

But it’s in the waiting that God builds your character, teaches you patience, and strengthens your faith.

Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

God’s timing is perfect. He’s never late.

And when you feel like you’ve been waiting forever, remember: God is still at work behind the scenes.

He’s setting things in motion for your good and His glory.

Follow the Will of God

At the end of the day, knowing God’s will requires faith.

It’s not always going to be clear-cut.

Sometimes, you’ll have to step out in faith, trusting that God will guide your steps.

Proverbs 3:5-6 sums it up perfectly: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God isn’t trying to hide His will from you.

He wants you to know it.

He wants to lead you.

And if you seek Him with all your heart—through His Word, prayer, peace, godly counsel, and your circumstances—you’ll find that He’s already pointing the way.

You just need to trust Him and take that next step.
