Today’s reading: Psalms 34:8

What does it mean to taste and see Yahweh?

We read in Psalms 34:8:

8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

To taste means to test. To see means to perceive. When David says that we taste and see that Yahweh is good, he is inviting us to try and see it for ourselves. David has already proven that God is good. Now, he is calling you and me to also prove God and arrive at the same conclusion.

Many people only heard about the Almighty’s goodness. They heard about it, but they haven’t really proven it to themselves. A lot of us know something, but only a few of us really have taken the time and effort to prove the things that we are told to be true.

That’s why, in this verse, David wanted us to taste. It means we can “take a bite” of Yahweh. Chew upon it. Taste its flavor. From there, you judge by yourself whether the taste confirms God’s goodness or not.

Aside from the sense of taste, David also tells us to use our sense of sight. If we only have the eyes to see, we can see around us God’s goodness!

We see God’s goodness in the rising of the sun and in the faces of our loved ones, in the beauty of mountains and beaches, in the home where we live, in the food that we eat, in the health of our bodies, in the safety of our journey, in the majestic power of the universe, and in so much more.

God’s goodness surrounds us every day, every second of our lives. From the beating of our hearts to the breathtaking view of mountains, God’s goodness is everywhere.

We should take the time to taste and see Yahweh’s goodness. Once we have experienced God’s love, we inevitably conclude that God is indeed good. He is not out there to harm us, destroy us, or prevent us from getting into His kingdom.

God’s goodness tells us that He is for us and that He is rooting for us to be part of His Family.

Indeed, taste and see God’s goodness in your life!
