Today’s reading: Psalm 29:1-2

The name of Yahweh

We read in Psalm 29:1-2:

Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones,
Give unto the LORD glory and strength.

Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Reading through Psalm 29, you will see how the name of Yahweh was repeatedly mentioned. In this chapter with only 11 verses, God’s name was mentioned almost 20 times!

This should tell us something. The name of the Almighty is important and it reveals a lot about His character. Sadly, most modern Bible translations have hidden His true name and replaced it with LORD.

Yahweh’s name means the Self-Existent or the Eternal One. This tells us that Yahweh existed from eternity to eternity. He is way beyond our human comprehension.

That’s why, in Psalm 29, we are commanded to praise and worship God. Notice, in verses 1-2, the word, “Give” was repeated 3 times!

This shows us the importance of giving God glory and honor due to His name. This could also testify to the stubbornness of human beings that David needed to strongly emphasize that we must give glory to God.

For the rest of the chapter, we read that the voice of Yahweh is powerful and full of majesty. His voice can do anything that it desires. His voice can do awesome things that no human voice could ever do.

What’s more, God doesn’t simply use His strength for Himself. In verse 11, we read that He gives strength to His people — the same strength that could do powerful things as written in the previous verses.

As you can imagine, Yahweh’s name tells us a lot about His nature. Thus, we shouldn’t simply dismiss it and replace it with a humanly devised title.

We ought to know the name of our Father. It helps to better understand who He is and what He is going to do. It helps us to better appreciate how He will take care of us.
