Let me say something that might bother you.
Stop asking God to bless you.
At least… not yet.
Because what if the real problem isn’t that God is withholding blessings—but that our hearts aren’t ready to carry them?
That’s not a popular message. We love prayers that say, “Lord, bless me. Enlarge my territory. Open doors. Increase me.” And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. The Bible is full of blessing. God delights in giving good gifts to His children.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth most of us don’t want to hear:
God is far more concerned with your heart than your harvest.
And sometimes, the delay isn’t punishment.
It’s protection.
I’ve seen it too many times—people praying hard, fasting, crying, quoting verses, doing “all the right things”… yet feeling stuck. Frustrated. Confused. Almost offended at God.
“What more do You want from me?”
Maybe the answer isn’t more effort.
Maybe it’s deeper alignment.
Scripture says,
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
Notice the order.
Seek first. Then things are added.
Before God adds blessings to your life, He often checks something first—not your church attendance, not your vocabulary, not how spiritual you sound.
He checks your heart.
Here are five heart-check goals worth examining before you ask God for the next blessing.

1. Can God Trust You With a Blessing—or Would It Replace Him?
This is the heart-check nobody likes.
We say we want blessings for God’s glory, but deep down…
Would that blessing quietly take God’s place?
Money has ruined more faith than poverty ever has.
Success has cooled more prayer lives than hardship.
Comfort has silenced more testimonies than suffering.
God knows this.
That’s why Scripture warns,
“Then it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land… beware, lest you forget the Lord who brought you out.” (Deuteronomy 6:10–12, NKJV)
The issue isn’t the blessing.
It’s what the blessing does to your dependence.
Ask yourself honestly:
- If God gave me everything I’m asking for, would I still pray the same?
- Would I still seek Him—or just thank Him occasionally?
Sometimes God withholds not because He is unkind, but because He refuses to be replaced.
2. Is Your Desire Rooted in Purpose—or Ego?
Not every desire is sinful.
But not every desire is sanctified either.
There’s a difference between wanting growth and wanting applause.
Between asking God to expand your influence and asking Him to inflate your image.
James didn’t mince words:
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” (James 4:3, NKJV)
That verse stings because it’s honest.
God isn’t impressed by spiritual language when the motivation underneath is pride, comparison, or insecurity.
Here’s a sobering question:
If no one ever noticed, applauded, or affirmed you—would you still want what you’re praying for?
God blesses purpose, not performance.

3. Are You Obedient in the Small Things You Already Have?
We love praying for more while neglecting what’s already in our hands.
More money.
More influence.
More opportunities.
But Jesus said,
“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.” (Luke 16:10, NKJV)
That’s not poetry. That’s principle.
How you treat the “little” things tells God everything He needs to know about how you’d handle bigger ones.
- Are you faithful with your current responsibilities?
- Are you honoring God in private, not just public?
- Are you stewarding your time, your words, your relationships?
God rarely upgrades stewardship that hasn’t been proven.
Sometimes the miracle you’re praying for is waiting on the obedience you’ve been postponing.
4. Is Your Heart Clean—or Are You Ignoring Conviction?
This one is quiet.
But it’s deadly.
Unconfessed sin doesn’t always stop prayers immediately—but it slowly weakens your spiritual sensitivity. You still pray. You still worship. But something feels… off.
David understood this deeply:
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.” (Psalm 66:18, NKJV)
God isn’t looking for perfection.
He is looking for honesty.
A heart that refuses correction cannot handle elevation.
Sometimes God delays blessings not because He’s angry, but because He’s merciful—giving you time to deal with what would destroy you at the next level.
Grace doesn’t ignore sin.
Grace confronts it so growth can continue.
5. Are You Willing to Be a Channel—or Do You Want to Be the Destination?

This might be the biggest heart-check of all.
God blesses flows, not reservoirs.
From the beginning, God’s design was clear:
“I will bless you… and you shall be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2, NKJV)
Blessings were never meant to stop with you.
Ask yourself:
- Am I generous—or just grateful?
- Do I pray, “Lord, bless me,” or “Lord, use me”?
- If God multiplied what I have now, who else would benefit?
God entrusts more to those who release more.
When your heart is set on impact instead of accumulation, heaven pays attention.
A Final Thought (And a Loving Warning)
This isn’t about earning blessings.
You can’t earn grace.
But you can be unprepared for it.
God loves you too much to bless you into pride, distraction, or spiritual ruin.
So before you pray for the next breakthrough…
Before you ask for the open door…
Before you beg God to change your situation…
Pause.
Let Him search your heart.
Because when your heart is aligned, blessings don’t have to be chased.
They follow.
And when God finally releases what you’ve been praying for, you won’t just receive it—
You’ll be ready for it.
