Today’s reading: Acts 1:8
Being a witness
We read in Acts 1:8:
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
As followers of the Messiah, we are called to be witnesses. However, what does that mean?
Being a witness means becoming like Yahshua, so that when people see us, they see Christ in us. We become God’s representatives and thus, we strive to set good examples for other people.
We become true witnesses to God through the choices we make in our lives. We serve as a witness by ensuring that what we think, the words we speak, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the friends we choose, the type of job we do, and all the things in between, reflect God’s character, love, and goodness.
Moreover, as a witness, we also preach the Gospel. We do God’s work in sharing the Word of God. Whenever possible and when there’s an opportunity, we share the hope that lies within us.
The Greek word for witnesses is martus, where we derive the English word martyr. The same Greek word is used in Acts 22:20:
20 And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’
Thus, being a witness means that we should also be willing to give up everything for Yahweh even if it means giving up our life.
There will be times when we choose to be a witness, we become different from others. We stand out and as a result, we may be a subject of ridicule and persecution.
Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Be steadfast and become a witness to this dying world.
