5 Things You Should Do During the Days of the Unleavened Bread

The Feast or Days of Unleavened Bread is one of the Holy Days commanded by God for us to keep. However, how should we keep it the way God intended it to be? If you’re a new Christian who finally decided to follow God’s appointed sacred days, this blog should be a great introduction to how to keep the Days of the Unleavened Bread.

The first command to observe the Days of Unleavened Bread is found in Exodus 12:14-20:

14 ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance. 15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 On the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you. No manner of work shall be done on them; but that which everyone must eat—that only may be prepared by you. 17 So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance. 18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

Also, the command was repeated in Exodus 13:6-7:

6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters.

Finally, God repeated the instruction together with other appointed sacred times in Leviticus 23. Then in verses 6-7, we read about the Days of Unleavened Bread:

6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.

From these verses, we can learn what we must do during the Days of Unleavened Bread. These are the following:

  1. We must obverse the Days of Unleavened Bread for seven days starting from the 15th day of the first month.
  2. We must remove all leavening agents and products and leavened food from all our dwelling place and places that we have control of.
  3. We must not eat anything with leaven.
  4. We must eat unleavened bread for seven days.
  5. We should have a holy convocation or assembly on the first and last day of the Days of Unleavened Bread.
