The Bible is clear that we should pray as we have previously discussed
0:04
So how should we do it? Thankfully, the same question came into the minds of the apostles
0:11
They asked Christ, Lord, teach us to pray. That's Luke 11, verse 1
0:17
Christ responded with what we now know as a model prayer, or for the most people, they call it the Lord's Prayer
0:25
Although the model prayer is a better name, since in this prayer, Jesus Christ or Yashch
0:29
gave us an outline of how we ought to pray to God
0:34
Now, I want you to understand and remember this, all right? Please bear this in mind
0:39
This prayer is not the exact words that we should repetitively utter
0:45
God does not want us to use vain repetitions. This prayer is rather a model and guide to help us know what to pray for
0:54
All right? So be sure you don't simply copy paste this in your daily prayer so that it loses its value
0:59
and meaning altogether. So let's take a look at the model prayer of Christ
1:05
and learn how to pray. These are some of the high points that we need to take note of
1:12
Number one, we don't pray to impress other people. Prayer is an intimate conversation between God and us
1:19
Jesus warns us not to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets that we may be seen by men
1:28
That's Matthew 6 verse 5. Clearly, if our intent is to please other men rather than God
1:34
then we are praying in vain. In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches about importance of genuine and authentic prayer
1:43
cautioning us against praying to impress others. He states, And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites
1:52
For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets
1:58
That they may be seen. by men. So that's the reason, so that they would be seen by men
2:04
Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. That's Matthew 6, verse 5
2:11
Yeshua's teaching here emphasizes the motive behind our prayers. He warns against praying solely for the purpose of gaining recognition
2:20
and approval from others, rather than seeking a sincere connection with God
2:26
The hypocrites, Joshua refers here, are individuals who prayed publicly in prominent places
2:33
not out of genuine desire to communicate with God, but to showcase their supposedly spirituality
2:40
and receive admiration from onlookers. Now, the emphasis of Yahshua's teaching is on the inward sincerity and authenticity
2:52
He encouraged us to pray in a way that is genuine, heartfelt
2:56
and focused on a relationship with God rather than seeking the praise and approval of others
3:04
Ultimately, Yahshua encouraged us to examine our hearts and motives when we pray
3:10
Prayer is that intended to be a performance for the approval of others
3:15
but a genuine expression of our faith and dependence on God. By praying sincerely and humbly, we open ourselves to a deeper and more meaningful connection
3:26
with our heavenly father. Number two, do not use vain repetition. In Matthew 6 verse 7, our Savior addresses the issue of vain repetition in prayer stating
3:38
and when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do
3:43
for they think that they will be heard for their many words
3:48
The problem with so many people is that they rely on repetitive and empty words
3:55
Their prayers become. a mere set of words they already memorized. They repeat the same words over and over again
4:02
to the point that it becomes useless and vain. That's why Joshua warned us that to use repetitive words
4:11
which actually don't work anymore. The phrase vainly repeat or bubbling like pagans
4:18
refers to the mindless, mechanical, and repetitive prayers devoid of heartfelt meaning and understanding
4:28
It was against approaching prayer as a mere ritual or a way to impress others with our eloquence
4:35
Yeshua encouraged believers to pray with genuine intention, reverence, and authenticity rather than relying on a formula of recitation or an excessive quantity of words Now I want you to remember this The emphasis here is on the quality of prayer not the quantity of prayer
4:58
Yahshua desires a personal and intimate relationship with his followers, where communication is sincere and meaningful
5:07
Therefore, the verse reminds us to avoid empty repetition or vainly reciting prayers
5:13
without truly engaging with God. Number three, our prayers should be addressed to God the Father
5:21
In Matthew 6 verse 9, it tells us, In this manner, therefore pray, our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name
5:31
This means we don't pray to any dead saints and people. They are all dead, and God is the only living God that we should pray to
5:39
Don't believe any priest or pastor who tells you that you need a saint for God to hear your prayer
5:45
bear in mind that addressing our prayers to God the Father is a way of acknowledging our relationship with Him
5:53
Our relationship is with Him and not with other people. So we must therefore direct our prayers to God as instructed by our Savior
6:04
Number four, our prayers should start with praise to God and Thanksgiving
6:10
Let's read Matthew 6 verse 9 once again. It says, in this manner, therefore
6:15
pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. This first tells us to hollow God's theme
6:23
Hollow means to praise and glorify God. Praising him includes expressing our gratitude and
6:28
our commitment to him. You see, Thanksgiving and prayer is a way to express gratitude and
6:36
acknowledge the blessings and goodness of God in our lives. It helps us to develop an attitude
6:42
of appreciation and contentment, recognizing that every good thing we have comes from God
6:49
That's James 1, verse 17. Including Thanksgiving and praise helps us shift our focus
6:55
from ourselves and our problems to God and His greatness. It helps us to cultivate a heart of worship and adoration
7:05
recognizing that God is worthy of all honor and praise, as we read in Psalm 95, verse 6
7:11
By praising Him, we elevate our perspective beyond our immediate circumstances, and remember
7:18
God's power, goodness, and sovereignty. Here's what's more interesting. Offering Thanksgiving and praise strengthens our faith
7:29
As we recall God's past faithfulness and blessings, it reassures us of his ability to work in
7:37
our present circumstances and future challenges. If he had helped us in the past, then he will surely help us in the future and also today
7:47
So that's what it means to add praise and worship in our prayer
7:52
Number five, we ought to habitually pray for God's kingdom to be established here on earth
7:58
Matthew 6 verse 10,000, Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
8:06
It's interesting how we all should include in our prayer for God's
8:09
kingdom to come here on earth. This world desperately needs a Savior and only Christ's
8:16
second coming can bring the utopia we all have been dreaming of. That's why we must
8:22
continually pray for God's kingdom to come and save this dying world once and for all
8:30
When we pray for God's kingdom to come, we align our hearts and desires with this ultimate
8:35
plan and purpose for the world. It is an expression of surrender
8:39
and submission to God's sovereignty, acknowledging his rightful rule and authority over all creation
8:48
Now, praying for God's kingdom comes with various implications. When you pray for God's kingdom
8:55
you also pray for God's redemptive work to extend throughout the world
8:59
and not just in the lives of Christians. It includes praying for the spreading of the gospel
9:05
the transformation of hearts, the growth of the church, and the manifestation of God's love
9:12
justice and righteousness in society. Praying for God's kingdom is also an expression for our longing
9:19
to see the lives of people change, the captives set free, and people reconcile to God through the power of His kingdom
9:28
Number six, we need to ask for God's will to be done in our lives
9:33
Let's read Matthew 6 verse 10 once again. Your kingdom come your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven God will is perfect and as Christians we need to constantly strive to know his will and to have the heart to obey him
9:52
If there's anything you want in your life, it should be the will of God
9:56
You will never go wrong in acknowledging God's authority and surrendering your own desires and plans to him
10:03
Actually, this is an expression of humility and trust, recognizing that God
10:08
wisdom and understanding far surpasses our own. Asking for God's will to be that invites his guidance and discernment in our decision-making processes
10:19
It acknowledges our dependence on his wisdom in insight, recognizing that he knows what is best
10:25
for us and direct our paths. By seeking his will, we invite him to guide us in making choices that aligned with his purposes
10:35
Indeed, we need to follow the admonition written in proverb. verse 5 to 6, where we read
10:42
trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding
10:48
In all your ways, acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths
10:53
Number seven, we pray for God's physical and spiritual blessings. Matthew 6 verse 11 tells us
11:01
give us this day, our daily bread. We need to realize that God is the only true source of blessings
11:08
and we are all dependent on him. By praying for our daily bread
11:14
we recognize that all good things come from God and that he is the ultimate provider
11:20
James 1 verse 17 tells us, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above
11:26
and comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning
11:34
Why do we need to ask for our daily bread? It is because our own resources
11:38
and abilities are not sufficient to sustain us. We depend on God's gracious provision for our physical needs
11:45
such as food, shelter, and clothing. Praying for our daily bread is an expression of trust in God's faithfulness to provide for us
11:56
Just as He has provided in the past, we trust that he will continue to do so in the present and in the future
12:02
praying for our daily bread fosters an attitude of gratitude and thankfulness as well
12:09
It prompts us to recognize and appreciate the blessings we receive each day, both big and small
12:17
What's amazing about being grateful is that it shift our focus from what we lack to what we have
12:24
which actually helps us to develop a heart of contentment. Now, here's where things get more interesting
12:31
Did you notice how it says Our Daily Bread? In prayer, we don't just pray for yourself
12:37
but you also pray for others. Making this part of your prayer allows you to develop a heart of compassion
12:44
and generosity. It reminds you to pray for those who struggle to have their basic needs met
12:50
and to seek ways to help and support them. Number eight, ask for forgiveness of our sins
12:58
In Matthew 6 verse 12, we read. and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
13:05
We are sinners and God's mercies enough for us to be forgiven
13:10
However, we need to realize that there are conditions for God's forgiveness
13:15
Before we can receive God's forgiveness, we must first forgive others. Notice in Matthew 6 verse 14 to 15
13:23
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you
13:28
but if you do not forgive men your trespasses, neither will your father forgive your trespasses
13:36
Now, if you want your sins to be forgiven, then you need to forgive others as well
13:42
Praying for forgiveness requires us to acknowledge and recognize our sins, our failures
13:48
and our shortcomings before God. Remember that sin creates a barrier between us and God
13:55
When we pray for forgiveness, we express our desire for reconciliation and restoration of our relationship with Him
14:06
Praying for forgiveness allows us to experience the depth of God's mercy and grace
14:12
When we come to God with a contrite and repentant heart, he is faithful to forgive us, as what we read in 1, John 1 verse 9
14:21
Through prayer we open ourselves to receive his forgiveness and experience the freedom and peace that comes from being cleansed from our sins When you pray for forgiveness you gain an opportunity to encounter the boundest love and compassion of our heavenly father
14:42
Number nine, we need to pray for God's divine help to overcome sin
14:47
Matthew 6, verse 13, tells us, and do not lead us into temptation
14:53
but deliver us from the evil one. Let us not commit the mistake of believing that we can overcome sin by ourselves
15:00
We can never do that. We need to recognize that sin can have a powerful grip on our lives
15:08
and we are weak if left on our own. We need God's intervention and help to fully transform our lives
15:16
Remember that only God has the power to change our hearts and renew our innermost desires
15:24
Through the work of the Holy Spirit, God can convict us of sin that grant us of repentance
15:30
and empower us to live a life that is pleasing to him
15:35
Number 10, we need to pray for God's protection. Let's go back to Matthew 613
15:40
We read, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one
15:48
Our enemy, the devil is so powerful, and there is nothing in his mind but to destroy God's people
15:55
As powerful as he is, he is powerless against God and through prayer
16:00
we can be protected from his evil schemes. As human beings, we are inherently vulnerable
16:06
and we face various dangers and challenges every moment of our lives
16:11
We are susceptible to physical, emotional, and spiritual harm. Acknowledging our vulnerability prompts us to seek God's protection
16:21
knowing that he is our ultimate source of security and refuge. Asking for God's protection is an expression of trust in his sovereign
16:30
sovereignty and power. We recognize that he is in control of all things and has authority over every
16:37
situation. By seeking his protection, we affirm our confidence that he is capable of safeguarding
16:44
us from harm and guiding us through difficult circumstances. And finally, number 11, we need to
16:52
end our prayer with praises again. Matthew 6 verse 13 ends with the statement. For yours is
17:00
the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Did you notice that
17:06
Yeshua started his model prayer with praise to God and now he is finishing with another praise
17:14
This tells us that our prayers should be filled with praise and worship to God. It helps us to
17:20
develop the right perspective and understanding of who God truly is. Can you just imagine that
17:27
you are able to pray to the most powerful being in the world
17:33
We are praying to the supreme ruler of this vast universe. Therefore, it is only fitting for us to end our prayer with praise, worship, and thanksgiving
17:42
to Yahweh, the most high God. Well, friends and dear students, those are the most powerful or important principles of prayer
17:51
that we can learn from our Lord and Savior Yeshua, the Messiah
17:56
Just to recap, here are the first of the first. principles of prayer that we must apply starting today. Number one, we don't pray to impress
18:04
other people. Number two, do not use vain repetition. Number three, our prayers should be addressed
18:11
to God the Father. Number four, our prayers should start with praise to God and Thanksgiving
18:19
Number five, we ought to habitually pray for God's kingdom to be established here on earth
18:24
Number six, we need to ask for God's will to be done in our lives
18:31
Number seven, we pray for God's physical and spiritual blessings. Number eight, ask for forgiveness of our sins
18:39
Number nine, we need to pray for God's divine help to overcome sin
18:44
Number 10, we need to pray for God's protection. And number 11, we need to end our prayer with worship and praise
18:52
Indeed, Yahshua's teachings about prayer could dramatically change the way we pray
18:58
There's no denying that he is the best teacher in this subject, and thus we must put into heart what he has taught us through God's work
