A lot of Christians believe that the New Covenant freed us from the law of God. They believe that Yahshua or Jesus Christ died for us so we don’t have to keep God’s laws.

However, is this what the Bible really teaches? Could it be that millions of Christians today are sadly deceived in their thinking about the real meaning of the New Covenant?

With these in mind, I would like to help you understand why the New Covenant didn’t abolish God’s law.

Think of this about the New Covenant

IF the New Covenant abolishes God’s law, then it follows that there might be something wrong in God’s law for it to be eliminated, right?

Well, a lot of people think that the law of God is harsh, unfair, and even irrational.

Now, if you come and think of it for a second: if the fault was in God’s laws and it was God who gave it, then the fault must have been with GOD!

To make things even crazier, a lot of people teach and believe that Yahshua (Jesus Christ) came to earth to THROW AWAY His Father’s law and teach that Christians are free to do whatever they please as long as they love one another.

Now, that’s totally absurd teaching, don’t you think?

If there’s no law to outline what love is, then how can one know what love is, how to demonstrate it, and how to express it? After all, love can be different from one person to another.

If the New Covenant abolished God’s Ten Commandments, then does this mean we are free to steal, kill, commit adultery, lie, dishonor our parents, and do other things that the Ten Commandments forbid?

Well, most Christians would say no!

They would argue, “We only follow what was repeated in the New Testament.”

So, they would accept every single one of the Ten Commandments except for one. Do you know what that is? It’s the Fourth Commandment — the Sabbath law.

Yet, if you read through the New Testament, you will find the word “Sabbath” mentioned more than 50 times!

So, what is it really that Christians hate about God’s law?

Yet, if you read through the New Testament, you will find the word “Sabbath” mentioned more than 50 times!

So, what is it really that Christians hate about God’s law?

Obviously, our human nature doesn’t want anyone or God to tell us what we can and we can’t do. That’s the reason why we simply don’t want to follow God’s law anymore.

Here’s what the Apostle Paul wrote:

“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:7-8),

What’s wrong with the Old Covenant?

When we talk about the Old Covenant, we are referring to the Sinaitic Covenant God made with Israel.

So, why is there a need to transition from the Old to the New Covenant?

The fault of the Old Covenant

There’s a reason why God has to end the Old Covenant and transition to the New Covenant.

What is that reason? There’s a fault in the Old Covenant.

We read:

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second” (Hebrews 8:7).

But what’s the fault?

Well, a lot of people are quick to point out it was the Law of God. Nevertheless, if you read further, you’ll find out the REAL fault:

… Because finding fault with THEM…” (Hebrews 8:8).

The crystal clear truth is that the fault wasn’t in God’s law, the fault was in the PEOPLE!

Here’s what you need to remember:

God’s law is perfect.

King David wrote in Psalms 19:7-9:

7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Wow! It couldn’t get clearer than that.

Yet, so many people believe with all their hearts that God’s law is oppressive, impractical, and unreasonable. Of course, they won’t openly admit it, but their actions tell you how they hate God’s law!

How to correct the fault

So, one of the main goals of the New Covenant is to correct this fault — to correct the people.

The next question now is, how? How would the fault be corrected in the New Testament?

Is it to do away with the law of God? Is it to abolish them?

Here’s what the Bible says in Hebrews 8:8, 10:

Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah… 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Did you catch that? God was saying that He will not get rid of His law. Instead of getting rid of them, what will He do?

He says He will “put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts.”

My friend, this is the truth!

The New Covenant did not remove the law of God. What it did was it changed where it would be written.

Instead of being written in the tablets of stones, it was written where? In the mind and hearts of His people!

Final Words

As you can see, the New Covenant did away with the ritualistic and sacrificial ceremonies of the Old Covenant. Because the Messiah hadn’t come yet, the nation of Israel needed something to remind them of the sacrifice that will be made by Yahshua.

Moreover, the Old Covenant only came with physical promises and blessings. It is only available to a select group of people. Through the life and sacrifice of Yahshua, the New Covenant offers eternal life and it is offered to all people who are willing to accept Yahshua’s sacrifice and follow God’s will for them.

What the New Covenant DIDN’T do is to abolish God’s laws. Instead of doing away with it, the New Covenant wrote the law in our hearts and minds. Yahshua even came to magnify the law and explained how we must apply the law in its spiritual intent.

No, the New Covenant didn’t abolish the law, instead, it has established it. Christians who claim to be under the New Covenant shouldn’t claim that they are free from following God’s law, but instead, they must follow it as a sign of their heartfelt surrender to God’s way of life.
