0:57
Today, we are going to discuss what fasting is. is and unlock our understanding of how fasting can help us in our walk with God
1:07
Fasting is going without food and drink. This is evident as we let the Bible define it
1:13
We read in Esther 4 verse 16. Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan and fast for me
1:22
Neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day, my maids and I will fast likewise
1:30
And so I will go to the king which is against the law, and if I perish, I perish
1:37
The word fast here came from the Hebrew word tomb, T-S-U-M, meaning to cover the mouth
1:45
In the New Testament, fast came from the Greek word, Nostio, meaning to abstain from food
1:51
In the Bible, the longest fast recorded was done by Jesus or Yahshua, Moses, and possibly Elijah
2:00
They were able to fast for 40 days and 40 nights. Obviously, this type of fast includes supernatural help as ordinary people today won't be able to do this
2:13
Now, fasting as we see it in the Bible, isn't just about skipping meals
2:18
It's a deeply personal journey of self-discipline and spiritual connection. Imagine sitting down with a grolling stomach, your heart heavy with prayer, seeking
2:29
answers and solace from God. Fasting is mentioned in both the Old Testament and the New Testament
2:36
And it has been practiced by individuals and communities for various reasons In the Old Testament fasting was a response to life most profound moments It was a way to show remorse to plead for forgiveness or to ask for direction from the Almighty
2:56
Take the Prophet Joel, for instance. He called for fasting when his people faced devastation from a locust plague as you read in Joel 2, verse 12 to 15
3:07
It wasn't just about skipping meals. It was about a community coming together in humble reflection, seeking guidance and redemption
3:19
In Libbyteco 16 verses 29 to 31, we read about the Day of Atonement, which is a day for the people of Israel to fast
3:29
And then in the New Testament, particularly in Matthew 4, verses 1 to 11, we see Jesus himself embarking on a 4
3:37
40-day fast in the wilderness. Can you imagine the hunger pangs he must have felt
3:44
The physical weakness matched only by spiritual strength? He also thought about fasting, emphasizing the importance of sincere and private fasting
3:55
as spiritual discipline as we read in Matthew 6, verse 16 to 18
4:01
The New Testament describes instances where individuals and communities fasted for various reasons
4:07
such as seeking guidance from God, that's Acts 13, verse 23, accompanying prayer and worship, Luke 2, verse 37
4:17
or dedicating themselves to the Lord, Acts 14, verse 23. It is important to note that fasting is not presented as a means
4:25
to earn salvation or impress God, but as an expression of devotion, humility, and seeking God's will
4:35
Overall, fasting in the Bible is a voluminous. act of abstaining from food or certain types of food for spiritual purposes, such as seeking
4:45
God's guidance, expressing repentance, or deepening one's relationship with Yahweh. It is often
4:53
accompanied by prayer, self-reflection, and the desire for spiritual growth. Different individuals
5:00
and communities may have different practices and reasons for fasting, but the underlying
5:05
principle is the same, to draw closer to God and seek His presence. Now you might ask
5:13
how long and often should we fast? There is one particular day when we are commanded by God to
5:19
fast It is during the Day of Atonement We read Diviticus 23 verses 26 to 29 and Yahweh spoke to Moses saying Also the 10th day of the 7th month shall be the day of atonement
5:34
It shall be a holy convocation for you. You shall afflict your souls and offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh
5:43
And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the day of atonement
5:48
to make atonement for you before Yahweh your God. For any person who is not afflicted in Seoul on that same day shall be cut off from his people
6:00
In the New Testament, the day of atonement is called the fast as we read in Acts 27 verse 9
6:06
Now when much time had been spent and sailing was now dangerous because the fast was already over
6:14
The fast that we do on the day of atonement lasts from sunset to sunset or 24 hours
6:20
Sadly, some people dismiss that the day of the time. atonement is just an Old Testament practice, and it is done away with after the death of Christ
6:29
However, there's no biblical evidence supporting the claim. As a matter of fact, Paul, the apostles to the Gentiles, continue to observe this day
6:39
even many years after Christ's death, as we read in Acts 27, verse 9
6:45
From the example of Day of Atonement, we can conclude that a normal fast is suggested to last for a day
6:52
However, on other occasions when you choose to fast, it can be done part of a day or more than a day
6:59
It depends upon your purpose. When it comes to the question of the frequency of our fast, it is really up to you
7:07
But it is highly suggested to fast at least once a month
7:12
Health individuals can even tolerate fasting twice a month. Of course, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor when you fast
7:20
especially if you have a pre-existing condition that would hamper your fasting
7:26
From there, you can decide how often you should fast and how long
7:31
Now, the next question would be, are we commanded to fast? We have already seen that we are commanded to fast in the Day of Atonement
7:39
but are we also commanded to fast on other days of the year
7:44
It is worth noting that Christ expects his followers to fast. When asked by the disciples of John, why Christ's disciples do not fast
7:55
Christ answered with a short parable and responded. But the days will come when the bridegroom, referring to himself, will be taken away from them
8:06
And then they will fast That Matthew 9 verse 15 When Christ explained his disciples how to fast he clearly said when you fast that Matthew 6 verse 16 to 17 He didn say if you fast
8:22
this clearly tells us that Jesus or Yahshua is telling us that we need to fast
8:27
When you think about it, we all fast. When we go to sleep, we go on without food and drink for
8:33
several hours. That's why you call it breakfast. However, this type of fasting is done out of necessity
8:42
The kind of fasting that God expects from us is a deliberate choice
8:47
Fasting for our spiritual growth does not come naturally. It should be a choice
8:52
Therefore, since God commanded us to fast, then we need to choose to do it
8:59
In summary, fasting is a powerful spiritual tool that allows us to draw closer to God
9:05
seek His will and purpose for our lives and increase our faith
9:11
Yes, fasting will make us physically weak, but it makes us spiritually strong
