Book Review: Why You Should Read Humility by Andrew Murray

In this post, you will read about a review of the book, Humility by Andrew Murray, reasons you should read it, and the powerful quotes from the book.

Humility is probably one of the most difficult virtues to develop in the Christian life. As humans, we are geared toward feeding our ego, puffing up our self-importance, and focusing on why we are better than others. That’s why it is important for us to discover the importance of developing humility in our lives.

In this post, let me share with you my thoughts for the book of Andrew Murray, Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness.

Description of the book

My Humility book review starts with how this book can significantly help you develop a good sense of your true self-worth. It shows you how we can become truly humble by knowing who we are and who God is.

The book only has 12 chapters. They are short and you can even read this book in a day or two. It addresses how we can fill our lives with humility as opposed to filling it with pride.

About the Author

It was in 1828 that Andrew Murray was born in South Africa. He received his formal education in Holland and Scotland. After a few years, he returned to South Africa and served as a missionary and a pastor.

Humility is only one of the many books written by Andrew Murray. He married Emma and raised eight children.

Why you should read the book

The number one reason you need to read the book is it addresses a basic problem in all humanity. No matter who you are, where you are from, and what position you hold, pride lurks within all of us.

The best thing about this book is it shows us how we can overcome pride. It helps us develop the proper mindset that would help us to be more humble and less prideful.

Moreover, Humility by Andrew Murray shows us how Yahshua or Jesus Christ humbled Himself to redeem us from our sins. It is through His humility that salvation is made available for all humanity.

The book will show you the importance of humility not just in our own self, but also for the entire world. If it is pride that made Satan rebel, it is humility that helps us obey God.

Best quotes from the book Humility by Andrew Murray

After reading the book, I captured some important and wonderful quotes that I want to share with you.

Humility, the place of entire dependence on God, is, from the very nature of things, the first duty and the highest virtue of the creature, and the root of every virtue.

Men sometimes speak as if humility and meekness would rob us of what is noble and bold and manlike.

Humility before God is nothing if not proved in humility before men.

The humble man feels no jealousy–or envy. He can praise God when others are preferred and blessed before him. He can bear to hear others praised and himself forgotten, because in God’s presence he has learnt to say with Paul, “I am nothing.”

Self can never cast out self.

It is indeed blessed, the deep happiness of heaven, to be so free from self that whatever is said of us or done to us is lost and swallowed up, in the thought that Jesus is all.

Should you read Humility by Andrew Murray?

Of course, please note that there are some statements in the book that I don’t agree with. But they are just minimal and overall, the book is incredibly helpful. If you’re curious about my core beliefs, you can read about them here.
