Why You Should Stop Caring About What People Think (And What You Should Do Instead)

In this post, read the 7 compelling reasons why Christians should stop caring too much about what other people think and start caring about what God thinks instead.

Do you care about what people think about you?

Do you often try to get the approval of others and make sure they are pleased with you?

Do you go out of your way proving other people wrong about their perception of you?

Do your decisions in life depend on how people would feel and think?

If your answer to these questions is yes, then you are setting yourself up for a great disappointment.

You know why?

Because you can never please everyone all at the same time.

There will always be people who are bound to hate and dislike you.

I strongly believe that this is a common problem that we all can relate to.

After all, we are all humans and as humans, we tend to always seek the approval of others.

Worst, we also based our value on other people’s thinking and feeling.

That’s why I would like to share with you why Christians should stop thinking and even worrying too much about what people think about them.

Reason no. 1: Opinions are most often not based on facts

The only Being that knows you best is God.

God even knows you better than yourself.

Most people may know you to some extent, but they don’t completely know you.

Thus, in most cases, their opinions are not based on facts, but on their feelings. Because of this, it is so difficult to change people’s perceptions of you.

The more you prove them wrong, the more they will look for ways to prove themselves right.

Reason no. 2: What people think reflects who they are rather than who you are

A lot of people have opinions about you.

However, these opinions are most likely based on their core beliefs, experiences, and level of knowledge.

If they say something bad about you, it is more likely they are talking about the bad in themselves.

Because they are too blinded from their faults, they see their faults in someone else, and then, that’s when they react negatively.

The Apostle Paul talked about this in Romans 2:1:

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the SAME things

So, be careful with passing judgment.

Before you judge others, judge yourself first.

Reason no. 3: People’s opinion change

You can’t rely on people to give you value.

You know, why?

Because their opinions, feelings, and beliefs change.

They are unstable.

They may like you today and may dislike you tomorrow.

Reason no. 4: Some people just don’t like you

No matter how hard you try, there will always be people who will not like you.

There are those who are just out there to point out your faults.

No matter how good of a job you have done, they will always look for something to prove otherwise.

So, don’t waste your time pleasing these people.

Reason no. 5: People who seek to please men end up sinning

I believe this is the most important reason why we should stop pleasing other people.

It is because it could lead to disobedience to the Most High God.

Let me give you a few examples.

Do you remember Moses during the burning bush incident? He was so hesitant to go back to Egypt because he was afraid of what people may think about him.

How about Aaron during the golden calf incident? Because he wanted to please the corrupt people of Israel, he gave in to their demand and let Israel commit idolatry with his permission!

King Herod is also a man-pleaser. To please the Jews he killed James the brother of John and got Peter arrested during the Days of Unleavened Bread.

There are also other politicians mentioned in the Bible who put men’s opinions above all else.

Finally, how about the Pharisees? These men-pleasers love to pray in public, fast so people can see them, give an offering with fanfare.

What did Yahshua or Jesus Christ call them?

Hypocrites.

They are like white-washed tombs — beautiful on the outside, but full of dead men’s bones on the inside.

If we constantly seek to please other people, we are in danger of compromising our beliefs and disobeying God.

Reason no. 6: You can’t control other people’s thinking and feeling

Here’s a fact that we often forget:

We can’t control someone else’s feelings.

In the same manner, they can’t control you.

They are responsible for their own feelings and thoughts as you are responsible for yours.

Reason no. 7: It’s a waste of time to please others

I remember what Dave Ramsey, the author of The Total Money Makeover, once said (I’ll paraphrase it):

People buy things they don’t need with the money they don’t own to impress people they don’t like.

Be careful, you may become one of these people who try to impress others in vain.

It’s just useless.

The good you do for others can easily be forgotten while the bad things you do can easily be remembered.

So, what should you do?

If Christians should not care too much about what other people think, then what should we do instead?

Here’s what and this is the main point of this blog:

Please God rather than men.

When your priority in life is to please God, you can never go wrong.

Ultimately, your value is found in God and no one else.

People may see you as a nobody, but God sees you as a somebody.

It is only God who can see your heart.

People can’t.

They may see who you are on the outside, but it is only God who can see from the inside.

In 1 Samuel 16:7, you will read:

But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For Yahweh does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”

Thankfully, God does not base who we are by the opinions of others.

The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 1:10:

“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”

Paul is saying here that we CAN’T be a bondservant of Christ if we are too busy pleasing other people.

The order is clear: please God first.

He shouldn’t be second, third, or fourth.

But FIRST.

When it comes to choosing between pleasing God and pleasing men, we should already know the right choice.

Why?

Because when we finally stand before the judgment seat, God will NOT ask us whether we got the approval of other people or not.

Rather, God will ask us whether we got HIS approval or not.

If pleasing the Most High makes us lose the favor of men, then so be it.

We rather lose people’s favor than God’s favor.

So, DON’T waste your time and energy proving everyone wrong.

Instead, use your time and energy in pleasing God.

When you do, everything will fall down to its right place.

Remember, our ultimate reward is from God.

Therefore, please God rather than men.
