What to do when you’re angry at God

In this post, learn what you should do and remember when you’re angry at God.

About two years ago, before I went to sleep, something inside me kept me awake.

There’s this strong emotion that I can’t contain anymore.

All those years of waiting culminated into this disbelief.

I wanted to scream.

I want to hit the wall with my fist.

I wanted to bang my head.

But I can’t.

It was an emotion so difficult to wrestle with.

So, I just cried.

At that time, I was angry.

I was angry not to myself.

I was angry not to anyone, but I found myself angry at God.

Because of that, I stopped praying.

I stopped meditating.

I stopped reading the Bible.

I stopped worshiping God.

I even thought to myself to stop overcoming sin because it is all useless.

You see, we have been praying every day for something to happen.

We have been praying for the past few years until now for Yahweh’s divine intervention.

Like a child begging for His Father, we prayed and fasted, but nothing seemed to happen.

The thing that really made me angry at that time was the thought that God can deliver us right there and then, but He didn’t.

For some reason that I don’t know and understand, from my perspective, God wasn’t answering our prayers.

I try to justify my anger.

I told God that I always strive to be good, to follow His commandments, and do His work. There are worse people than me, why would God give me this trial. Why me, why us?

So, it was — the first time I got seriously angry with God.

Are you angry with God?

How about you, have you gotten angry with God?

Perhaps, yes, while some of you, no. Whether you got angry at God or not, there might come a time when you will.

Not only that but if you look at the world around us, this world is filled with angry people who hate God.

Some do acknowledge the existence of Yahweh, but they consider Him as immoral because of the evils in this world that He allows.

When you get angry or you feel life is unfair because God is not doing something for you, how should you react?

What should you tell yourself?

How can you make sense of all this suffering in this world?

Understand your anger

The first thing you need to realize, brethren, is to understand your anger.

Why are you angry at God?

There could be various reasons, but the fundamental reason for your anger is that your expectation wasn’t met.

You expected God to act this way, but He didn’t.

That’s it.

That’s the main reason you’re angry.

Perhaps, you have been praying for healing, for divine protection, for favor, for a relationship to work, for promotion, for patience, for faith, and other things, but you didn’t receive it.

You feel like God is unfair.

He is asleep.

He doesn’t care.

He loves to see His people live in misery.

Problems are a normal part of life

But can I tell you something?

Yahweh does not owe us anything.

He never promised in the Bible that you will have a life free of problems, trials, and suffering.

Yes, He promised deliverance, blessings, and help when we need them.

However, in most cases, God sees the need for us to go through life’s difficulties so we learn and develop patience, faith, and trust in Him.

He said in His word that we will face a lot of troubles while we go through life.

Let us go 1 Peter 4:12:

¹² Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you.

Trials and problems are a normal part of life.

It is to be expected.

It is never a question of if, but when.

We need to realize that life is not just unfair for you, but it is also unfair to everyone. So, that makes life somewhat fair.

If you think rich people don’t have a problem, think again. The highest suicide rates are found in first-world countries.

If you think you have the worst illness in the world, think again, because somewhere in the globe, there’s a person who has a worse medical condition than yours. In fact, a lot of people are fighting for their lives.

The unquestionable love of God

We need to also realize who we are apart from God. We are nothing. We are simply made of dust here today and gone tomorrow.

A lot of people always ask, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” However, have you also asked, “Why do good things happen to imperfect, sinful people?”

Why do good things happen to us, human beings who are by nature sinful, rebellious, and stubborn?

In fact, the moment we commit a sin, we must already be dead, yet, we are still here alive and given a chance to repent and overcome our sinful ways.

Because of God’s great love, He made the ultimate sacrifice and that is to offer His only begotten, beloved, and most cherished Son.

Now, tell me, should we still be angry at God? Should we still say God is unfair, unloving, and indifferent to our suffering? Of course not.

As a Father to His children

We must think of Yahweh as our Father.

According to Psalm 84:11, God will not withhold anything that is good for us.

Remember when you were a child, if your parents gave you everything that you want, what do you think would happen?

If your parents gave you all the chocolates and candies that you want;

If your parents allow you to play near a cliff;

If your parents allow you to watch TV all day;

You will surely become sick, lazy, and worst of all, dead.

Now, you won’t call that to be too loving, right?

In the same manner, we must believe that whatever you are going through right now, we must NOT allow it to distract us from the goodness of God.

Have the right focus

You see, sometimes, we are so focused on the things that God didn’t give us to the point that we can’t see the things that God already gave us.

We might even forget about the good things God gave us even when we didn’t ask for them!

That’s what happened to me.

The reason I’m angry was that I was trying to bend God to what I think how things are supposed to be rather than allowing God to lead me.

I forgot that God has been answering our prayers in so many wonderful ways. I forgot that God’s way is better than my way.

So, friends, instead of getting angry, bitter, frustrated, and disappointed, the Apostle Peter told us something that we must all apply. Let’s continue reading I Peter 4:12-14:

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

Did you see it?

The suffering, the trial, the opposition that you’re experiencing right now are part of the suffering of Yahshua (Jesus Christ).

We remember Yahshua to have suffered and died in the hands of sinful men.

Yet, we didn’t read anywhere in the Bible that He became angry towards God.

If there’s anyone who is justified to get angry with God, it would have been Yahshua.

Peter was saying that if you are suffering right now because of following God, to no fault of your own, instead of getting discouraged, frustrated, or bitter, we must rejoice because we have become partakers of the suffering of Christ.

We are experiencing the same suffering that the Messiah endured.

And because we have been partakers of Yahshua’s suffering, we will also become partakers of His glory.

The bigger the problem, the bigger the solution

You see friends, one of the reasons why God allows you to go through trials, difficulties, and problems is that God wants to show you His power and glory.

The more difficult a problem is, the more power is manifested when God intervenes. Sometimes, He allows impossible problems so that when He intervenes, you can conclusively say without a shadow of a doubt that it wasn’t you who solved the problem, but God.

Now, here’s the thing: once God has finally intervened, you will become a living testimony to His greatness, love, and favor. You become a living example that God is indeed alive and is still on His Throne.

The throne is not empty that your prayers would be useless. He is there working out a plan greater than any plan you can imagine.

So, if you feel like your problem is too big for you to handle, surrender it to God and let go of it.

Let God fight the battle for you. Let God do what you can’t do. Let God do the impossible.

Preparing to rule

More than anything else, God is preparing you to become a future ruler in His glorious Kingdom.

If it will take a lot of testing, difficulties, and problems to prepare you for that role, then God will allow it so that you will be part of that glorious Kingdom.

Not more than you can handle

Now, here’s something that you need to remind yourself every time you go through life’s difficulties. You need to do this because if you don’t, you will surely get disappointed or like me, angry at God.

Here’s the reminder:

God would not allow a trial in your life if it will prevent you from reaching your destiny.

God will not allow a problem to come in your life that you can’t handle. All those difficulties are not there to keep you from the Kingdom, but to prepare you for the Kingdom.

God is not against you. He is for you. He is rooting for you and He wants you to be part of His family.

1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us:

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Anger, bitterness, frustrations, and disappointments are never the right response, but instead, trust in God. Be faithful and steadfast. Yahweh didn’t bring you this far just to leave and forsake you.
