Today’s reading: Hebrews 4:15-16

Sympathize with our weaknesses

We read in Hebrews 4:15-16:

15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

One of the most powerful changes that happened under the New Covenant is that we now have a spiritual High Priest, Yahshua the Messiah. We don’t have to rely on mortal men to serve as our high priests.

The implication of having Christ as our High Priest is tremendous and awe-inspiring. We can see here that because Yahshua experienced how it is to be a fragile human being, He can genuinely sympathize with us.

The word “sympathize” here can also be properly translated as “for we do not have a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.”

This tells us that Yahshua suffers along with us. While Christ is fully a God, He is also fully a human being. By experiencing first hand what it means to be a human being, Yahshua can feel what we feel whenever we go through trials and problems in life.

What makes this more interesting is that Yahshua was tempted at all points. This means that He experienced the FULL strength of temptations. Unlike us who give up on a certain level, Yahshua actually went through all levels of temptations, but still, He was without sin.

Since Yahshua knew what we experienced, He can also better comfort, motivate, and encourage us as we go through life’s trials.

What’s so significant about this is that we can have the confidence that Christ knows exactly what we are going through right now. If you are in pain, He perfectly knows your pain.

Because of this, we can now boldly come to the throne of grace. We can obtain favor and mercy. We can be glad that we have a High Priest who will mediate for us. He can make intercessions for us.

Don’t ever think that God is not approachable, that we can never reach out to Him. No, that’s a lie Satan wants us to believe. We can all go to God and talk to Him with Christ as our High Priest.
