Today’s reading: 1 Timothy 4:1-2

Seared with a hot iron

We read in 1 Timothy 4:1-2:

1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.

One of the most dangerous things to happen in a Christian’s life is for his conscience to be seared with a hot iron.

The God-given conscience serves as our moral compass. It tells us what is morally right and wrong. It makes us guilty when we are about to commit a sin or when we have already committed a sin.

It’s good when we respond to our conscience when it makes us guilty. However, when you repeat a sin over and over again, you are searing your conscience with a hot iron.

You may feel guilty at first, but if you ignore that guilt-feeling long enough, there will come a time when you don’t feel guilty anymore.

Having a conscience seared with a hot iron means that your conscience has been hurt multiple times that it developed scar tissues. You have a painful wound the first time your conscience was seared with a hot iron, but when repeatedly done, wounds become scars.

In the same way, when our conscience develops a “spiritual scar,” we become dull and numb against the guilt feeling of committing a sin. When that happens, we are quenching the Holy Spirit, and eventually, if nothing is done and nothing changes, the Holy Spirit will leave us.

This is the reason that we see some people who are not bothered with their sins anymore. An unmarried couple may feel guilty at first for committing premarital sex. However, when they repeat it again and again, they are searing their conscience with a hot iron to the point they don’t feel guilty anymore.

The same goes for people who lie, steal, and commit adultery. The first act of sin makes them sad, remorseful, and regretful. However, if they don’t act on the conviction of their Holy Spirit, then they will surely not be bothered anymore.

Earlier in Paul’s letter, he described a good conscience as opposed to a bad conscience (1 Timothy 1:5):

5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith…

A good conscience is one that works together with a pure heart and sincere faith. When we have a pure heart, free of sin, we inevitably develop a good conscience. When we are faithful in obeying God’s Laws, we develop a good conscience.

Don’t wait until your conscience becomes numb and dull. Make sure you become sensitive to your conscience, to the Holy Spirit that guides and convicts you.

  1. Great topic, but I have a question: what about the sincere believer who struggles with a particular sin like myself? I’m 40 years old and I have all these years been struggling with homosexuality, I have repented of it I have cried out to God to deliver me from it, and yes I know it’s wrong but at the end of the day, I hate homosexuality does that mean I’m seared with a hot iron when I hate that sin and I try my best not to indulge in it?

    • Hi Jacovindavis,

I know we all have our struggles. I, too, have sins that I struggle with. However, that doesn’t mean that our conscience is seared with iron. The mere fact that you are still struggling means that your conscience is actively convicting you to do what’s right.

I pray that you will be able to overcome this problem. I highly recommend you talk to a pastor or someone who is spiritually strong and can give you advice personally.
