Today’s reading: Ephesians 2:1-2

Prince of the power of the air

We read in Ephesians 2:1-2:

1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience…

The Bible called Satan the prince of the power of the air. He wasn’t called the king, because Christ is King, but he is called the prince.

By calling Satan the prince, the Scripture acknowledges that he has some authority and power. He has a certain domain that he controls and he uses this power to influence human beings.

One interesting observation here is how Satan actually dominated the “air” of this world. By air, we can be referring to airwaves where a lot of communication happens.

Ever since we started to communicate by radio, Satan has used this as a medium for him to spread his lies, deception, and wickedness among people. Now, we have modern technologies such as smartphones, the Internet, and televisions.

Satan has used all these modern technologies to further work in the sons of disobedience. As you may have already observed today, the Internet is filled with filth and dirt at such a level that we haven’t seen before.

A huge part of the Internet is pornography. Aside from that, fake news is everywhere. We get a lot of misconceptions and falsehoods that run from religion to politics.

Aside from that, Satan used entertainment media to feed us with negative thoughts. We could see how children’s shows have become a medium to influence our young individuals to think ungodly. We could see how a lot of TV shows feature immorality and normalize wicked behavior.

Satan, as the prince of the power of the air, has successfully influenced a lot of people to think in the same way as he is. No wonder we see a lot of people doing unimaginable crimes and gruesome criminal acts. All of these are inspired by the power of the prince of the air.

Thus, we must realize that Satan is real and that his influence on humanity is dramatically widespread globally. It doesn’t just infect individuals, but governments and social structures.

With this in mind, the best way to combat Satan is found in 2 Corinthians 10:4-6:

4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

That’s right, we must bring every thought — not just some — but EVERY thought into captivity to Christ and not to the evil prince that rules the air.

When we do this, we tune out from the airwaves of Satan, but we tune into the airwaves of God.
