Do things decently and in order
We read in 1 Corinthians 14:33, 40:
33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints… 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
Paul was writing to the brethren in Corinth, which is a dominantly pagan city. The members in this church were Gentiles and as new members of the Body of Christ, there is plenty to learn. They need to learn not just doctrines, but how they conduct themselves.
As you can imagine, gathering together as church members has its own challenges. The church members may gather in small groups in their homes. There can be a group of ten, perhaps. Some can be bigger.
When the brethren gather, others may like to speak and share their thoughts. When people talk at the same time, especially in a bigger group, things can become noisy, confusing, and chaotic.
This is what Paul was trying to address here. Paul wanted to teach the Corinthian church to conduct themselves decently and orderly.
Paul explained that God is not the author of confusion but of peace. If there’s confusion, then that’s not from God. What we don’t want is to have confusion plaguing the brethren every time they gather together.
How can we prevent confusion from happening? We do things decently and in order. We do our best to systematically conduct services. We don’t let everyone talk at the same time. There’s an assignment for everyone. All have a role to play. Not everyone should do the same thing at the same time. That’s when confusion happens.
If all people try to be the leader, no one would be a follower. If everyone tries to be a follower, no one would be the leader. The point is that we should strive to put an order in everything that we do —- not just in church services, but also in our daily lives.
We all strive to gain God’s peace, not the confusion of this world.
