Today’s reading: Psalms 73:1-3

Why do the wicked prosper?

We read in Psalms 73:1-3:

1 Truly God is good to Israel,
To such as are pure in heart.

2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
My steps had nearly slipped.

3 For I was envious of the boastful,
When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

One of the greatest stumbling blocks among believers and unbelievers is the supposed unfairness of God. In this Psalm, Asaph wrote how he saw the wicked prospering.

For many people, no one deserves to flourish but the righteous people. After all, we are doing the will of God and God should bless us materially and physically.

Yet, we see that’s not often the case. Wicked and evil people become rich and famous.

Therefore, some people asked, “What’s the use of being good if both the good and evil are rewarded?”

What we must understand is that God’s ultimate goal for us is to develop godly character. This world is not meant to be our home — not yet. It is temporary and the main purpose we are here is to prepare for the next life.

This is our training ground. We are not meant to stay in this world and become rich forever. That’s just temporary, but we are aiming for something that’s eternal.

If you see the wicked flourish, it will not be forever. Yes, they may enjoy the pleasures of this life, but you know that their life is ultimately empty — devoid of the genuine peace and joy that only Yahweh can provide.

It is not our job to tell God what He should and should not do. Our focus is to follow His commandments and do His purpose in our lives.

Whether the wicked flourish or not, it doesn’t matter. What matters most is your relationship with our heavenly Father and what we are doing to fulfill His will for us.
