Today’s reading: Job 3:1-4

Curse the day I was born

We read in Job 3:1-4:

1 After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 And Job spoke, and said:

3 “May the day perish on which I was born,
And the night in which it was said,
‘A male child is conceived.’

4 May that day be darkness;
May God above not seek it,
Nor the light shine upon it.

When reading this verse, it seems that this is a Job different from what we have read about in earlier chapters.

We know of Job as the one who praised and worshiped God even after receiving bad news after bad news. Now, we are reading a Job that curses the day he was born.

So, what’s going on here? Did Job change his heart? Was Job indirectly cursing God? Was He sinning? Was he wrong to curse his birthday?

A lot of questions and yet, at this point, it seems that we don’t have the exact answers yet.

However, what we are seeing here is the outpouring of Job’s emotions. In his despair, he expressed himself to God and others through his words.

Now, notice how Job didn’t actually curse God, something that Satan wanted to happen. He cursed the day He was born but not the Almighty.

We can see here that expressing your thoughts and feelings to God is acceptable. However, There’s also the real danger where you can go to the extreme and lose all your confidence in God.

Job did say things we would consider unacceptable. However, in all these, Job didn’t lose his faith in God. He still respected God’s laws. In the end, he still let God direct his path and reveal Himself to Him.

It’s quite comforting to know how we can always go to God and share our thoughts and emotions. In spite of the pain, we can always have God to talk to.

  1. It is also interesting that his wife told him to curse God and die. His honor for God never let him do this, and ours will not either. Thank you for your wonderful writings. They continue to exalt the love, power, holiness, and mercy of our Heavenly Father!
