Ananias and Sapphira

Today’s reading: Acts 5:1-4

We read in Acts 5:1-4:

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

When you simply read the story of Ananias and Sapphira, it seems that their punishment was too harsh. However, there’s more to the story than what we read.

What Ananias and Sapphira did was not just a simple lie, but was actually a conspiracy. The growth of the first-century church was astonishing and remarkable. As a result, the married couple might have thought of “buying” some influence in the church. They wanted to be recognized as someone who was worthy of a higher position.

This teaches us a vital lesson. Seeking preeminence and status and playing politics within the Body of Yahshua is dangerous. If Satan is going to destroy the Church, he would surely attack its leaders. If he can’t take out church leaders, then he might as well just add corrupt leaders.

In the person of Ananias and Sapphira, if their lies were not discovered soon enough, they might have become leaders and thus become the proverbial rotten tomato that would spread diseases from within.

God was right when He struck the couple right there and then. It was the best way to prevent the contamination of the church and also magnify the authority of the Apostles, which God chose to lead His church.

Truly, pride comes before a fall, and thus, we must be careful not to follow in the footsteps of Ananias and Sapphira.
