Today’s reading: Acts 4:24-26

Praying the Scripture

We read in Acts 4:24-26:

So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said:

Why did the nations rage,

And the people plot vain things?

26 The kings of the earth took their stand,

And the rulers were gathered together

Against the LORD and against His Christ.’

We often pray to God with our own words and thoughts. We share our inmost longing, fears, dreams, and feelings.

However, one of the best ways to pray that you may want to consider is praying with the Scripture.

In today’s reading, we see how first-century Christians prayed to God. They quoted passages from the Scripture. It’s a great way for us to involve Yahweh in our prayers.

For example, if you’re praying for protection, you can pray and mention a verse or two from Psalm 91 or even the whole chapter. If you’re anxious, you can pray Philippians 4:6-7. When you are discouraged, Joshua 1:9 is a good verse to quote. Psalm 51 is a great prayer for repentance.

The Bible is filled with passages that you can quote for specific situations.

So, the next time you pray, try to include the Scripture and it should make your prayer more fervent, effective, and genuine.
