Today’s reading: Acts 3:2-7

Do you limit yourself when giving?

We read in Acts 3:2-7:

2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. 4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” 5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

Sometimes, we try to limit ourselves when it comes to helping other people. Yes, there are things that we can’t give, but like the Apostle Peter, he gave that something that he has.

Yes, one of the ways we can help other people is through giving financial support. However, that’s not the only way we can help, and sometimes, that’s not even possible for us.

Some people use this as an excuse to simply do nothing and turn a blind eye. As followers of Yahshua, we must actively think of ways to help even if that’s not through giving money.

Another lesson we can learn here is that Yahweh knows exactly what we need the most. For the lame man, he asked for alms, but the Almighty has a better plan.

The lame man might have been disappointed when he heard that Peter didn’t have silver, gold, or money to give. In the same manner, we may ask for a solution from God and not receive it.

In our minds, God isn’t answering our prayers, but that’s not really the case.

Thankfully, we can be confident that God can give us something that is better than we asked for. We just have to have the eyes of faith to appreciate the greater blessings that God bestows on us, including the blessings that we didn’t ask for but He still gave to us.

  1. This is an amazing story! He was healed so he could work and make his own, not being dependent on others to provide for him. If only men could trust this today rather than having a welfare mentality. Men should work with their own hands to give to the old and afflicted who are not able to.
