Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 23:1-4

The last words of David

We read in 2 Samuel 23:1-4:

1 Now these are the last words of David.

Thus says David the son of Jesse;
Thus says the man raised up on high,

The anointed of the God of Jacob,
And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 “The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said,
The Rock of Israel spoke to me:
‘He who rules over men must be just,
Ruling in the fear of God.

4 And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises,
A morning without clouds,
Like the tender grass springing out of the earth,
By clear shining after rain.

Part of the reality of life is that no matter how great a man you are, you will still come to the end of your life.

David was now old and had lived an extraordinary life. In the last days of David, he looked back to his humble beginning and how God raised him up.

David’s life was full of ups and downs, blessings and cursings, triumphs and failures. Yet, in all these, David was called a man after God’s own heart.

We read about the despicable sins of David, sins that we thought might have made David’s situation as hopeless. However, David’s life is a testament to God’s love, grace, and mercy. His life stands in time to show us that no matter how hopeless our situation is, we can always come out victorious as long as we have the right heart.

At the end of David’s life, God didn’t look at the failures of David. The Almighty didn’t look at his sins. Yahweh didn’t look at his shortcomings.

The Most High looked at David’s heart and today, my friends, God is also looking at your heart.

It is your heart that matters. We all have sinned and have fallen short of God’s glory. No matter how hard we try, we will sin.

However, the most important thing is that your heart is right with God. You constantly seek God, don’t give up, and stay on course.

We might stumble from time to time, but as long as we continue walking the path of righteousness, God will still meet us at the end of our life.
